Franklin MS Weekly Update - October 1

Good Afternoon!

Today marks the start of October which brings with it many of the enjoyable activities and traditions that occur in our homes, communities, and schools during the Fall months.

I would like to thank everyone who attended our Student Services Virtual Coffee earlier this week. There were some great discussions about the resources available to families during the two-year middle school journey. This was the first of many community outreach events that will be taking place this year.

The Franklin PTA had their first meeting of the year this week and they are off to a great start! All families are encouraged to join the PTA and to look for an opportunity to get involved. A great way to find out more information is to visit the PTA website or to contact our PTA President. I would like to take this opportunity to put on a spotlight on the first PTA Community Dining Event of the year at Mod Pizza on October 17. More information on how to be a part of it can be found here.

In closing, I would encourage all Franklin MS families to review the message sent to you yesterday by our Superintendent, Dr. Brabrand, regarding several concerning trends on social media. We will continue to address this topic at our school, and I am asking for your partnership in speaking with your children about the serious nature of these acts and the consequences they will face if they participate.

During August and September, we have a learned a lot about how to make every day at FMS a positive experience. As we begin October, we will continue to learn, reflect, adjust, and grow together as we move through the year as a school community. We are grateful for your continued support and partnership to make this a successful school year for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Franklin MS After School Program Information

We enjoyed a great first week of the after-school program. It’s never too late for your child to join. If your child plans to attend an after-school activity, you must complete the Registration Form (required for all Franklin students). Most activities are drop in and your child will not need to sign up for in advance. The schedule and club descriptions can be found here. For questions regarding the After-School Program, please email Mrs. Mollé.

Digital Resources Consent Form

Due to some changes to YouTube this year, your student will not be able to view YouTube videos for class if you have not completed the Digital Resources Consent Form. You can review the tools used at Franklin here. Please reach out to Anne Baker if you have any questions.

Student Rights and Responsibilities Parent Signature Sheet

Students recently participated in Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) presentations and activities. An important part of the SR&R process is the partnership Franklin has with its parents and guardians through the completion of the SR&R Parent Signature sheet as acknowledgement of receiving the SR&R handbook electronically. Parents and guardians can acknowledge receipt of the SR&R in ParentVue in your child’s SIS account or sign the hard copy Parent Signature Sheet to acknowledge that you have received this document. Please e-sign through ParentVue or return the signed signature sheet to your child's school by October 29, 2021.

AAP Advanced Academics Fall Screening

This pertains specifically to those students newly enrolled in FCPS and attending after January 2021. Information regarding the Level IV Advanced Academics Program in FCPS can be found here. The referral form and optional screening materials are due to your child’s school counselor no later than October 7, 2021 if you would like to pursue eligibility (final decisions to be shared in December). Students who do not have cognitive testing score on file will be offered the opportunity in mid-October to take the CogAT. Please contact your child’s counselor with questions.

CogAT Testing Information

On October 15, Franklin will be administering the CogAT to 7th grade students who do not have an ability test score on file. The CogAT is used as one piece in determining AAP eligibility. Most students who will be tested are those who are newly arrived to Fairfax County Public Schools this year. We will contact your family directly if your child is eligible for this assessment. Families of students who were assessed in a prior year may also request that their child take a one-time retest of the CogAT. Please submit this request to Brandon Clarke.

World Language Credit Exam

This year’s World Language Credit exam will be administered November 16, 17 and 18 at Robinson SS, Centreville HS and Edison HS. For more information about the exam, please visit the FCPS World Languages Credit Exam web site. Students interested in registering for the exam may reach out to their school counselor prior to October 13, 2021.
