Important information from Hughes Middle School

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has come to our attention that there is a list of social media “challenges” on TikTok and ask you to speak with your student(s) about them. The recent "Devious Licks" TikTok Challenge encouraged students to vandalize and steal random objects from their schools and post them in videos.

Unfortunately, the brand-new boys’ restrooms were vandalized here at Langston Hughes by a few of our students.  Since then TikTok has been proactive about banning this content. However, the list of monthly “activities” is being shared on Social Media.

We are asking you to have conversations with your student about the disruptive nature of these challenges and that such behaviors could result in school disciplinary consequences, and criminal charges. Please offer your guidance and talk with your student. You may be surprised that your child knows exactly what this challenge is about and can tell you people they know who has engaged in it.

For your conversation with your student, we want to share with you that the upcoming challenges listed are:

October: Smack a staff member on the backside.

November: Kiss your friend’s girlfriend at school.

December: Deck the halls and show your b****.

January: Jab a breast.

February: Mess up school signs.

March: Make a mess in the courtyard or cafeteria.

April: Grab some “eggs” (another theft challenge).

May: Ditch Day.

June: Flip off the front office.

As you can tell from the titles of these challenges, most are crimes in addition to being very disruptive to the school community.  They also present a disciplinary and health risk for those attempting to film them and  importantly, in the case of crimes, could lead to criminal charges as well as discipline in line with the  Students’ Rights and Responsibilities which we all acknowledged at the start of the school year.

We have great students at Langston Hughes Middle School, and we have already formed a very strong and positive community in our classes and common areas.  We want them to be mindful that participation in these challenges is not appropriate behavior. We appreciate us all working together to be vigilant about our students’ online presence.

The safety and security of all of our students, both physical and emotional, is our priority as we continue to create a learning environment that cultivates a culture of kindness, inclusivity, and affirmation for every member of our student body and staff.  We appreciate your support of your student, our school, and our mission together here.
