FH Weekly Update - 10/3/21

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

Fall has arrived! We are starting to enjoy the changing of the leaves, the cooler temperatures, and much fun and learning (and lunch) inside and outside of the building. Our staff and students continue to do a wonderful job following our health mitigation strategies and keeping one another safe. We have a few brief thank yous this week:

  • This week is Custodian Appreciation Week. Our dedicated crew of Salvador, Rosalina, Vilma, and Esther have been working overtime to keep our school clean and safe with many extra responsibilities this year. They also prepared our school with Herculean speed this summer after our many summer school programs ended within hours of the first day of school. If you or your student would like to drop off a thank you card or item, we would be happy to pass it along to them. We will be honoring them with a luncheon on Thursday.
  • Thank you to our many families who have contributed to making our outdoor lunches a success! Many have made donations for furniture/seating or volunteered their time as a lunch chaperone. With donations we were able to order an additional tent and tables that will arrive soon.
  • Thank you to our parents and PTA for organizing our upcoming October events. You can see information below on Enrichment programs, Walk/Bike to School Day, and Spooky Movie Night! Mr. Curtis and the Green Team will also be working on the garden next Saturday and would love to have your help! See more information below.

A brief reminder from our front office - if you need to make a transportation change for your student at the end of the day, please contact our front office by 2:00. This allows our staff to be fully focused on dismissal. Thank you!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Vision/Hearing Screenings

Over the next several weeks, Mrs. Berg will begin vision and hearing screening for all students new to Fairfax County Public Schools and all Kindergarten and 3rd grade students. The purpose of the screening is to identify students who need further evaluation because they have difficulty seeing the  screening chart or hearing the screening tones.

Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further testing is needed.

Remaining Virginia Growth Assessment Testing Dates for 3-6

The Virginia Growth Assessment is a new assessment designed to assess students’ knowledge of concepts from the Math and Language Arts curricula. Assessment results will be used to better align instruction to student needs, and will be taken by all public schools students in Virginia. As with our SOLs at the end of the year, we ask that families not schedule appointments on their students' testing dates. An additional informational email will be arriving with more information. Thank you!

We have a membership goal to raise $10,000 this year. Do what you can and become a member.
