Book Fair Announcements
Student eWallet
The book fair continues this week! Remember to create an eWallet account for your student. This account alleviates the need for cash to be brought into school and any remaining balance carries over to online purchases or future bookfairs. Your student just needs to tell our cashiers their name & teacher at checkout for their balance to be applied to their purchase.
Teacher book donation
We have set up a way for anyone to make a monetary donation to the school for teachers to receive books and other supplies for their classroom. This QR code takes you directly to the donation page. Please disregard the notation stating it is for the 6th grade class; this is for the entire school. All donations will be allocated accordingly to teachers after the bookfair.
Laptop Power Cords
3rd-6th grade students: please make sure to keep an eye on your FCPS chargers. We are seeing a lot of students that are losing their charging cords and we will have to start charging families for lost chargers. Thank you.
Should My Child Come to School?
Parents: Please use this Questionnaire to determine if your child should come to school on any given day. If your child is at school and displays Covid-like symptoms, they may be sent to the Care Room and required to be picked up. At that point, we will give you a Return to School Form that must be completed by a medical professional upon your child's return to school.

Virginia Growth Assessment
Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a new test required for students in grades 3-8. The state legislature introduced this requirement to measure student growth and progress within the school year in reading and mathematics.
For fall 2021, VGA will address content that was taught in the previous school year. The purpose of this fall’s VGA is to identify potential learning gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no “passing” or “failing” outcome for the VGA. Results will provide a starting point to measure growth and will offer information about areas of strength and areas for growth in reading and mathematics.
Students enrolled in grades 3-8 will generally take an assessment in both reading and mathematics. However, elementary and middle school students enrolled in a high school credit-bearing math course, such as Algebra 1, will not take a VGA for mathematics.
The following points may help you and your student better understand this assessment.
- VGA must be taken in-person at school.
- This online, computer-adaptive test is about half as long as the spring SOL test.
- Questions use Standards of Learning (SOL)-like items to measure current knowledge and skills in the content area.
- Student results will be used to help school staff plan for instruction and supports.
Across Fairfax County, elementary and middle schools will give students the VGA in September or October. At Crossfield, 3-6 students will take the Reading VGA on Monday, October 4th and the Math VGA on Wednesday, October 6th.

Community Flyer Distribution Date
Tuesday, October 12
Our community flyer distribution date is Tuesday, October 12. If you would like to send a flyer out to our community, please submit a copy for approval by Thursday, October 7 to our office assistant, Jennifer Kudlacik, at jtkudlacik@fcps.edu. After your flyer is approved, you will need to provide bundled copies for school distribution. Details about quantities will be shared once the flyer is approved. There will be a second distribution date in the spring.
Adv. Academics Program Parent Meeting

(RATE) Conference
Assistive Technology to Enhance Learning for All Students

This year’s conference will be VIRTUAL with synchronous (live) sessions.
The RATE Conference is an educational conference that focuses on strategies for using assistive technology hardware, software, and peripherals to enhance learning for all students, especially for those with special needs. Sessions will focus on high and low incidence special education assistive technology supports, as well tools to help students using augmentative and alternative communication.
This year’s keynote presentation features the Thomas Jefferson School for Science and Technology Assistive Technology Club.
All FCPS Staff, Parents and Community Members are invited to attend!

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SCREENER
Crossfield students will take the SEL screener with their counselor October 12-22. If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please fill out this opt-out form by October 1, 2021. I-Ready Assessment in September & October
The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test.
The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.
iReady and any necessary follow-up assessments are given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on the grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive the assessment again in the winter and/or in the spring. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class.
