PTA Reflections Contest

A message from Principal, Amy Miller

Dear Kilmer Families,

This week, FCPS shared the StreamIN/CheckIN process for students who are paused, quarantined, or isolated due to COVID-19. StreamIN/CheckIN will give students who are paused, quarantined, or isolated a way to stay connected with their classes until they return to in-person learning. Click here to learn more about StreamIN/CheckIN.

At Kilmer, if a student is paused, quarantined or isolated due to COVID-19, the student’s administrator will contact the family. Following that initial contact, the student’s school counselor will connect with the student and family to support accessing the StreamIN/CheckIN and assignments. The school counselor as well as the student’s teachers will check-in with the student on a regular basis to ensure continued connections through the StreamIN/CheckIN and assignments.

Students at Kilmer will be taking the Virginia Growth Assessment starting next week. Please see below for additional information.

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

Student Picture Day

Student photos will be taken through PE class on Thursday, September 30 and Friday, October 1. Students will receive a photo brochure next week in PE. Photos can be ordered in advance by visiting Lifetouch’s website: https://my.lifetouch.com/mylifetouch/#/ website, entering the Kilmer’s Picture Day ID EVT3F2XCC and ordering your package.

Lockers

Students who would like to request a locker for this school year may complete the locker request form posted in the All Students Schoology page. The locker request form will close on Friday, October 1 at 3pm. This process was shared with students through KTV morning announcements today and a posted announcement through Schoology. Please keep in mind students will need to continue using their backpacks to carry their laptop during hallway transitions.

FCPS World Language Credit Exam

Students who can read and write in one of 30 languages may access an opportunity to earn high school credit through the World Language Credit Exam offered in November. Please visit the FCPS World Language Credit Exam Site for more information on the 30 languages tested. Students who are interested in taking the World Language Credit Exam need to fill out this form  with their FCPS Google Account to complete registration with their School Counselor. Information for students has been posted to the Student Services Schoology page.

Virginia Growth Assessment Next Week

The Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a new test required for students in grades 3-8. The state legislature introduced this requirement to measure student growth and progress within the school year in reading and mathematics.

For fall 2021, VGA will address content that was taught in the previous school year. The purpose of this fall’s VGA is to identify potential learning gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no “passing” or “failing” outcome for the VGA. Results will provide a starting point to measure growth and will offer information about areas of strength and areas for growth in reading and mathematics.

Students enrolled in grades 3-8 will generally take an assessment in both reading and mathematics. However, elementary and middle school students enrolled in a high school credit-bearing math course, such as Algebra 1, will not take a VGA for mathematics. The following points may help you and your student better understand this assessment.

  • VGA must be taken in-person at school.
  • This online, computer-adaptive test is about half as long as the spring SOL test.
  • Questions use Standards of Learning (SOL)-like items to measure current knowledge and skills in the content area.
  • Student results will be used to help school staff plan for instruction and supports.

Across Fairfax County, elementary and middle schools will give students the VGA in September or October.  The students at Kilmer Middle School will take the tests on Monday, September 27 (Reading 7), Wednesday, September 29 (Reading 8), and Friday, October 1 (Math) during 4th period.

Students should check their fcpsschools.net email account, after Thursday, 9/23, for their testing schedule.

If your student has been given an English or Bilingual dictionary to use for their classes, please remind them to bring it to their testing locations.

More information can be found on the FCPS VGA Website. Please contact Marileigh Blake, our School Test Coordinator at mlblake@fcps.edu for any questions.
