Glasgow Community Gazette - September 19

Glasgow Community:

Greetings! I hope you had a peaceful weekend! This past week we had our Back to School Night, celebrated Yom Kippur and also started celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, which goes through October 15th. At Glasgow we recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. I spent this weekend hanging out with my son at soccer practice, attending a NAACP Fairfax event, celebrating my dad’s birthday and conducting some weekend home visits to families. Also, thank you to those families who sent me great book recommendations last week!

COVID mitigation and keeping transmission rates low, continue to be a priority at Glasgow MS. We will continue to keep the community in the loop on our efforts. The Fairfax County Health Department announced a change in their communication process for students waiting for COVID-19 contact interviews. You may read about these changes on the FCHD website. You may also wish to review the FCHD FAQs for parents of school-aged children. We appreciate the continued partnership between FCPS and FCHD.

Coming soon, our students will be engaging in Fall assessments within reading and math, which will be helpful for our staff to see what unfinished learning skills are there for our students. As always, please let me know if you would like me to visit you with a Home Visit this year! My goal is to stay consistent with ensuring we are getting out in the community and going to our families to ensure our community and school partnership is strong throughout the school year and beyond. Please let me know if our team or myself can support in any way. Please contact me or our team if you have any questions. Thank you.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell,  Principal

The exam is designed to assess students’ first language proficiency and enable them to earn credits toward fulfilling the world language requirement for the Advanced Studies Diploma in high school. Passing this exam will also award students with the Biliteracy Seal upon graduation. Students who have the ability to read and write in one of the following 26 languages may take the exam to receive high school credit*:

Summer Reading Celebration:  Summer is quickly coming to an end on Sep 22.  Please encourage your child to participate in Glasgow's Summer Reading program!  It is a bingo board, with many suggestions for kids to read print/digital books, listen to audiobooks, get active, and be creative. Students can work at their own pace and choose which activities they would like to try! Check out our summer Bingo board at bit.ly/GMSsummer Students can win prizes for participation and  will celebrate their participation at the end of September! Reach out to the library staff if you have any questions.

From the Tech Office: We have issued over 1850 student laptops with chargers in the past few weeks.  By now, every student at Glasgow should have received their laptop.  If not, please have them let their teacher know so they can be sent to the tech office to be issued a new one.  Please know if they did not return their laptop from the 2020-2021 school year, they will not be issued a laptop until that one is returned.  It is also important that this laptop is fully charged at home every night before school.  Glasgow classrooms are not equipped to charge every student laptop at once. Finally, if a laptop or charger is lost there is a fee to replace.  A lost laptop cost $472 and a charger is $23.  We do not have the ability to replace these items for free. Please be sure the laptop and charger is always put in a safe place when not in use.
