Important information from Hughes Middle School

Principal's Message

Dear Hughes, Middle School Families,

You may be aware of the current trend that has emerged on the social media platform TikTok, calling for students to vandalize schools and promote the acts under the tag, "Devious Licks."  A recent Newsweek article has more detail.

Schools across FCPS are being vandalized and having property stolen, including here at Langston Hughes Middle School. We are especially concerned because soap dispensers have been stolen from our boys’ bathrooms, presenting a challenge to maintaining a healthy and safe school environment.

This morning I reminded all of our students to be good citizens of the school community and to consider the consequences of their actions. I ask you to take the time to reinforce this message to your students at home.

Additionally, in response, we are checking bathrooms throughout the day and using our hallway cameras to monitor who is going in and out.  We have also assigned additional supervision around the bathrooms during transitions and added hand sanitizer outside of the bathroom so that it can be monitored by our security cameras.  We will also have a lesson in our Monday Connections class on being a good Digital Citizen when it comes to Social Media.

The majority of our students are doing the right thing in the instance.  However, students who vandalize school property are violating the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities and will face disciplinary action.

I appreciate your support in talking to your child both about their own use of Social Media and any actions that they might take that may have consequences beyond the digital world.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Respectfully,

Aimee Monticchio

Principal
