Happy Friday,

Thank you for your continued support helping our students navigate social media. This week’s Tik Tok trend has been handled quickly by parents and staff, and we appreciate your support. As a reminder, KJMS does not have any social media presence on SnapChat. We have heard that there is an inappropriate KJMS presence on SnapChat and would encourage you to speak to your children about that. Our students are doing a wonderful job adhering to our Away for the Day expectations, which also includes earbuds. Students should have ear phones that are corded and can be used with their laptops.

Mask shortages--like many other things across the country, it now appears that disposable masks are in high demand with all of the nation’s schools and businesses back to in-person, masked interaction. Please encourage your children, especially on days where they have PE, to bring an extra mask from home should they find themselves needed to change their masks. They have done a wonderful job wearing masks, and we want to make it even easier for them should the need arise. If the need does arise, please encourage your child to stop by the office for a mask while supply last.

In closing, we are excited to have our after school programming beginning soon. Please reach out to Mr. Dejo with any questions at jadejo@fcps.edu. We look forward to another great week next week with our Eagles.

Soaring together,

Tammy Silipigni

career day

Career Day Registration

Career Day will be held on Thursday, November 11th from 7:45-10:10. If you are interested, please take a look at this FAQ with additional information which includes how to register to participate. The last time we held Career Day we had upwards of 50 different careers represented. We had a wonderful turn out in the Career Clusters of Education & Training and Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security. We would love more representation in Marketing, Manufacturing, and Architecture & Construction. Please consider joining us on that day to expose our students to all the different careers that are out there!

New Health Department Process to Expedite Communications for Students Awaiting COVID-19 Contact Interviews

The Fairfax County Health Department announced a change in their communication process for students waiting for COVID-19 contact interviews. You may read about these changes on the FCHD website. You may also wish you review the FCHD FAQs for parents of school-aged children. We appreciate the continued partnership between FCPS and FCHD.

COVID-19 Free Testing Sites

When working with students and families who need access for free COVID-19 testing, please see a list of free testing sites here; Coronavirus (COVID-19) Testing | Health (fairfaxcounty.gov).  If families do not have insurance access here is a list of FQHC and other resources below.

  • HealthWorks provides COVID-19 testing free for uninsured patients who meet eligibility for the sliding scale fee and do not already have another primary doctor. Patients should call 703-443-2000 to get a telehealth evaluation by a medical provider prior to scheduling a test.
  • Neighborhood Health provides COVID-19 testing free for uninsured patients who meet eligibility for the sliding scale fee. Patients should call 703-535-5568 to get a telehealth evaluation by a medical provider prior to scheduling a test.
  • Inova Cares Clinics for Families provides primary care services for patients with Medicaid or low-income uninsured patients up to 400% Federal Poverty Guideline and offers limited COVID-19 testing.

Boundary Policy Review

Provide Input on Boundary Policy Review at a Virtual Community Meeting

The Fairfax County School Board is in the process of reviewing Policy 8130, Facilities Planning, Local School Boundaries, Program Assignments, and School Closings.

In July 2019, the Board requested the Superintendent hire an outside consultant to work with the Board to identify best practices in boundary policy and engage the community in the discussion.

MGT Consulting Group (MGT), an education consulting firm, will be sharing information about the boundary policy review at three upcoming community meetings and seeking community input in a survey.

You are invited to attend a virtual community meeting on Monday, September 20, from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Each meeting will provide the same information and use the same format. No specific boundary changes will be discussed at the meetings.

Please register online to receive the meeting link and indicate if you need an interpreter.

MGT has sent enrolling parents an email with the survey link to collect input. The community meetings will not be discussing any boundary changes for any schools within FCPS. The information shared will focus on what factors should be considered when making boundary changes. Please take part in the FCPS Boundary Policy Review Community Survey. The survey closes on Friday, September 24.

More information about the Boundary Policy Review is available online.

Attendance

If your child is not feeling well, please do not send them to school.  Returning Strong is going great.  WE love see our students back at school, but we need to work together in this COVID world we are living in. Please keep your child home if they have any signs of illness.

If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the school. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred) from the main page of the Katherine Johnson website:
  2. Call the attendance line at 703-934-2424 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

If your student will be picked up early for an appointment:
Please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal.
Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the KJMS Attendance page.
