Administrators' Avenue

Dear Fairhill Families-

We are off to another great week here at Fairhill! Thank you to all of you who were able to come to our Town Hall and PTA meeting last Thursday. We had over 50 participants!!! Our next Town Hall will be on October 14th with a focus on student mental health. Please continue to share the word with other Fairhill Families to join.

We have two COVID updates to share as reminders. First, FCPS has decided that all COVID cases will be reported on Friday evening for the week. If you are interested in knowing the day by day count at any specific school, the FCPS dashboard will still be updated daily. Second, our mitigation strategies work and continue to get better each and every day. FCPS just released data that less than 0.2% of students and staff in the division are currently quarantined due to COVID or COVID exposure. We made great strides in the cafeteria last week and appreciate your flexibility and continued support as we think and rethink all of our procedures to keep safety at the forefront of our work.

Finally, don’t forget our PTA event and fundraiser, Fairhill Fitness Week & Fun Run, is happening the last week of this month. The Fun Run event will take place during specials on Friday October 1st. Please consider supporting this fundraiser if you are able. Click here for more information on making a donation or see your teachers newsletters about class wide and school wide incentives.

As always, we are here to support and ensure that your student(s) are having the best year possible learning and growing so please feel free to reach out if we can be of help in any way.

All our best,

Ted & Courtney

Keep your child home from school with any symptoms that are COVID-like.

The most important way you can help as a parent is to keep your child(ren) home if they present with any illness or symptoms that are associated with COVID: runny nose, coughing, headache, sore throat, fatigue, diarrhea, etc. If you keep your child home, and they are feeling better the next day, then they do not need documentation from a medical provider to return. However, if your child comes to school and presents with symptoms, they will be placed in the Care Room and will be sent home. Your child must then be seen by a medical provider in order to return to school and you will be given a form to get completed by the doctor.

Parents, caregivers or guardians, are strongly encouraged to monitor their children for symptoms of infectious illness every day through a home-based symptom screening and students who are sick should not attend in-person instruction. Please consider the questions in the HealthScreeningQuestionnaire for 2021-2022.pdf each morning before sending your child to school. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions, please keep your child home.

New Birthday Treat Policy

Beginning this school year our birthday treat celebration policy will be new. Birthday celebrations are important!  We would  like to recognize the birthday celebrant on their special day at school! If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, here are ways we can celebrate:

  • Bring in a favorite book to share/read
  • Your child gets to pick the read aloud story for the day
  • Donate a book to the school library or classroom in honor of your child’s birthday
  • Donate a board game to your child’s class to be used for indoor recess
  • Send in small, tangible items to be distributed to the class (pencils, erasers, stickers, etc.)

Unfortunately, sharing birthday treats with classmates/friends this year will  need to be done outside of the school building. Thank you for your understanding and support of our new Birthday Treat School Policy as we work towards providing safe and healthy options at all celebrations and events.

forms

Forms, Forms, Forms!

As we return to school each fall, there are certain mandatory forms that need to be filled out.  Please click on the following links to fill out the necessary documentation we require each year for every student.  You can either print the copies and send them in with your student, or you can email them to ackane@fcps.edu

1. Digital Resources at Fairhill-Parent Consent Form (read below)

At Fairhill Elementary, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent on our website. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to Stephen Giese, School Based Technology Specialist, if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

A paper copy of the form can be requested and submitted in the main office at Fairhill.

2.  Emergency Care Form or here for the online link to       WeCare@school.

3.  Health Information Form or here for the online submission link through              WeCare@school.

4.   Student Rights & Responsibilities Form

5.   Opt-Out Forms

Parent/Guardian Access to Family Life Education Lessons

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms were sent home last week and are available online for Elementary (K-6) Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to Fairhill prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online here. They are also posted in the Fairhiill All Parents Schoology course.  Parents/guardians can login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Carrie Reynolds, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at cfreynolds@fcps.edu.

fun run

Fairhill Fitness Week and Fun Run!

We are excited to announce that we are preparing to launch the Fairhill Fitness Week and Fun Run!  For those of you who were around in 2018, you may remember that the fun run was a very fun and successful event.  We plan to follow the same format again this year.

When will this occur?

Fairhill Fitness Week: Monday September 27 – October 1

The Fairhill Fun Run will be held during specials on Friday, October 1 outside on the field.

Why are we holding the fitness week and fun run?

The goal of this week is to make it a fun week for our children that is focused on fitness and to be our largest fundraiser of the year.  To do this, we brought the fun run in-house, meaning no outside vendor in the school during the week disrupting classroom time. In turn, the PTA keeps approximately 90% of the profit versus 50% using an outside vendor, putting more funds directly back into our school to benefit our children!

Dinner Night Out!

Join us for our second dinner night out this year on Wednesday October 13, 4-9 pm, at Mama Tigre - 10443 White Granite Drive, Oakton, VA

COVID-19 Case Notification Update

Many families are finding it stressful and overwhelming to receive a new COVID notification email every time there is a positive case in their child’s school. We have updated our process to provide families some relief.

Once a week, either on Friday or the last day of school for the week, school leadership will share an update if there were any reported COVID-19 positive cases in the school that week. The FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics webpage will still be updated daily for families who wish to know about cases in real time.
