After-School FAQ

What is the KJMS After-School Program?

The KJMS After-School program consists of a diverse set of club offerings, including recreation, social, life skills and academic enrichment activities.  Unlike Elementary SACC programs, students choose specific clubs of interest and attend on those meeting dates.  This Fall, we will be offering an in-person program.

When are activities offered?

Clubs and activities are offered 5 days a week from 2:30 – 4:30PM.

  • Late Buses are available on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at ~4:30pm
  • Tuesday and Friday are Parent Pick-up Days at ~5:30 - limited activities on these days
  • There are no After-School activities on Holidays or Early School Closings.

When do clubs and activities begin?

Most After-School Activities and Late Bus Transportation will begin the week of September 20th.  Please refer to the After-School Calendar for the most up-to-date information on club meetings: KJMS After-School Google Calendar

When can I sign-up for clubs?

Club information (schedules and descriptions) will be added to the KJMS After-School Program Student Site (accessible through Schoology) on an ongoing basis beginning the week of September 13th.

How do I sign-up for clubs?

Students will sign-up through the KJMS After-School Program Student Site (accessible through Schoology).  Students will need to be logged into their fcpsschools.net Google account in order to access  the KJMS After-School Program Student Site.

  • On the KJMS After-School Program Student Site:
    • Scroll Down to Club Descriptions
    • The far right column is titled "Club Enrollment"
    • Click on the link in order to access the Signup or Permission Form
    • Attend the Club meeting on the assigned day (refer to the KJMS After-School Google Calendar for the most up to date meeting schedule)

How many clubs can I sign-up for?

Students can attend as many after-school programs as they like as long as they don’t meet at the same time on the same day.  Some clubs meet for a set number of weeks and require student commitment.  Other clubs have a set number of spaces or require a student tryout to participate.

What do I do when I stay after-school?

For ALL students who stay after-school for an After-School Club, Activity, Team or Teacher Office Hours:

  • Arrive at the cafeteria no later than 2:25 (students who arrive after 2:25 will be sent home)
  • Students will complete their daily After-School Attendance and receive a FREE snack in the cafeteria
  • At ~ 2:30, Club Sponsors, Coaches, and Teachers will come to the cafeteria to take their students to their meeting location
  • All Students will return to the cafeteria at the conclusion of their activity until Parent Pickup (Door 7), Walker or Late Bus Dismissal (~4:30)
    • Games will be available in the cafeteria from 3:30-4:30 until dismissal
    • Late Buses are available on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
    • Once students leave the building, they will not be permitted back in the building (unless pre-determined by club)

Can I start an After-School Club?

Students can work with Mr. Dejo, the After-School Program Specialist, to begin a club!  Students who are interested in starting a club should complete the KJMS ASP Club Proposal Form available on the KJMS After-School Program Student Site.  Once this electronic form is completed and is received by Mr. Dejo, it will be reviewed and possible next steps will be discussed.

How much does it cost to participate in After-School Activities?

After-School activities are funded through a grant from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.  The program is free although there may be nominal fees associated with certain clubs that compete or have material costs.  These fees are associated with less than 10% of the activities we offer.

How will I get information about the after-school program?

Students will use the KJMS After-School Program Student Site for after-school information.  Important announcements about after-school will also be posted in Schoology.  Club information will be shared with club members through the club’s Schoology Group.

Parents will receive information about after-school activities through Schoology.  News You Choose updates regarding after-school will also be sent out to KJMS parents.
