Principal's Message

Dear SCMS Families-

I continue to be so proud of the ways in which our students and staff are engaging in learning and building relationships.  There is so much positive energy in the building and daily we feel the JOY of having our students at SCMS.  Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Observations:

This past week members of the SCMS community observed Rosh Hashanah on Tuesday. Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish New Year, and is filled with shared meals and prayer among loved ones. “Shanah Tovah,” to all that celebrated!

Rosh Hashanah also begins the Jewish High Holy Days leading up to Yom Kippur – a time when Jews focus their attention on repentance and reflection of action. The observance of Yom Kippur will start at sundown on September 15 and continue until sundown on September 16. “G’mar tov”- have a good final sealing.

20th Anniversary of 9/11:

This week we also reflected on the events of September 11. I often think about my own personal experience on 9/11. I was in my second year at UVa and vividly remember watching the events live as they unfolded. I also remember the fear and anxiety in the immediate aftermath as I contacted as many friends and relatives as I could. I spoke with my own 7th grade daughter this week as she interviewed me as part of her history assignment. The thing that stuck out to me the most during the interview was the immediate aftermath in which all Americans were bonded together in a shared experience and we all collectively put aside our difference to heal together.

Our school community shared in a time of mourning, remembrance, and reflection.  At South County MS, and in all FCPS schools in grades 3-6, students had the opportunity to learn about the events of 9/11, acknowledge shared history, and discuss how we move forward towards a better future. Curriculum resources have been provided to all Social Studies teachers and activities will be embedded in History and Civics classes. It is critical that we learn from the past and create a present where all are heard, seen, and welcomed.

Please feel free to reach out to me at any time and I look forward to seeing you at our virtual Back to School Night soon!

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki
