Lemon Road Community News 9.10.21

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Today was a spirited end to our third week of school. Thank you to all parents who joined us this morning for our Principals Coffee. Here is the link to the recording where we discussed Schoology, Testing, COVID procedures, and PTA news. We hope everyone can join our virtual PTA meeting on Tuesday night as well. We saw LOTS of school spirit today – if you still need to order updated spirit wear for your child (or you), check out this link before it closes on Sunday.

Thank you for collaborating with us to keep our students healthy and safe. We need volunteers every day during lunch – both indoors and outside. Please sign up and volunteer with us whenever you can using this link. Remember, if you are unsure if your child can attend school, please refer to this checklist or contact us in the morning. We continue to look for a responsible adult to be paid to support us daily with lunch. If you are interested in working 10:30 – 1:30, please contact Mr. Birge at mbirge@fcps.edu.

I am proud to be a part of such a welcoming and careful community. Have a wonderful weekend ~ Mrs. Castillo

FLE Preview Night

Lemon Road’s Family Life Education (FLE) Parent Preview Night is scheduled for Tuesday, September 14, from 6:30-7:00 PM.  Our Parent Preview Night will be delivered virtually through Zoom, and parents can access the event at this link.  Mr. Van Trees, our FLE Lead Teacher will lead parents through a brief overview of the curriculum and will share with parents where they can access FCPS FLE lessons.

As a reminder, if you wish to opt your child out of any FLE lesson, please see the information below which was sent home prior to the start of the school year and click on the link for any applicable opt out forms.

  • Family Life Education Opt Out Forms - Please read and return the opt-out form for your child’s grade level ONLY if you do not want your child to participate.  Program questions may be addressed at our school by contacting Mr. Van Trees at hwvantrees1@fcps.edu.  If you choose to have your child participate in the Family Life Education Program, you do not need to return the form.

P2 Strength: Curiosity

Curiosity is a crucial component of one's character. Our innate urge for discovery and exploration is a key element of our human desire for wisdom and knowledge. It’s what keeps us intrigued in the plotlines of  movies and books. It’s what pushes us to try new activities or travel to different places. All individuals experience curiosity, but differ in their willingness to experience it – behaviorally, intellectually, and emotionally.

Curiosity is associated with novelty-seeking. Novelty-seekers are more willing to endure risks – such as physical risks of skydiving or social risks of meeting new people – in order to gain the benefits of new experiences. Curiosity is also associated with being receptive to exploring new ideas, feelings, or values – which carry their own inherent risks and rewards.

PTA Updates

Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to postpone the Fall Festival and move it to the spring. This hopefully allows time for Covid-19 vaccines to become available for those under 12 years old and for those who wish to get vaccinated to do so.  The new date for what will now be our Spring Fair is Saturday, April 23, with a rain date of Saturday, May 14. If you signed up to volunteer, we hope you can join us in the spring. If you've already purchased your tickets, we hope you will consider rolling that purchase to the spring but if you'd prefer a refund please let us know.   We do apologize for the inconvenience but hope you understand that the health and safety of our elementary school students are of the utmost importance to us. In place of our Fall Festival, the PTA has arranged for The Inside Scoop to hold a socially distanced ice cream social at Lemon Road Elementary School next Friday, September 17 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the back of the school near the playground. The Inside Scoop food truck will be on hand for families to purchase ice cream cones, sundaes, milkshakes, ice cream sandwiches, and more! Masks are strongly encouraged when not eating ice cream.
