1. From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of the Chantilly HS Community:
Before I share the latest news and updates from Chantilly, I ask that everyone take a moment to reflect about the events that occurred 20 years ago tomorrow. September 11, 2001 is a day that will be forever etched in the memory of those that lived through it. I vividly remember teaching at Langley HS that day. As my second class started, my senior government students were especially agitated, and I asked what was wrong. A student told me that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers and I ran next door to a room with a TV. Like so many other Americans, I couldn’t believe what I saw. To help our students understand the significance of 9/11 and appreciate the many sacrifices that were made by their fellow citizens, teachers in our social studies department engaged students in a series of learning activities yesterday and today. In addition, our broadcast journalism students ran a special feature about 09/11 this morning. If you would like to view it, please use the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HBmVU1aPlQ
Sincerely,
Scott Poole

4. Asha-Jyothi 5K - September 19th
We are pleased to share that we continue to partner with a non-profit named Asha-Jyothi (https://www.asha-jyothi.org/ ) to sponsor an annual 5K Run/Walk on Sunday September 19th at Fairfax Corner at 8am. As returning families may recall, Asha-Jyothi donated over $100,000 to CHS in 2019 to help create our Innovation Lab in the library. All proceeds that we raise from this year’s 5K will go towards Generation Yuvaa, an initiative in India aimed at helping homeless children. We donated $4777 to the same cause as part of the last 5K, and our donation was used to provide food and school supplies to the children pictured above. Asha-Jyothi has generously agreed to donate back 100% of the registration money back to each participating schools AND:
An additional $500 for 25+ registrations
An additional $1000 for 50+ registrations
An additional $2000 for 100+ registrations
To sign up, participating staff, students and/or their families should visit the webpage: https://asha-jyothi.redpodium.com/2021fairfax5k. Simply enter the code “aj4schools” and select “Chantilly HS” from the drop down menu. A discounted price of $10 for the 5K (regular price $25) will be given to participants. 6. Recent Student Successes
This is the first installment for the school year of what will become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students. I plan to meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

-
Elijah (Eli) Ehlers is in his second year in broadcast class and consistently goes above and beyond in his work. He completed his first segment before the school year even began and has spent the first three weeks of school mentoring others, as well as working on a new segment. He is a tremendous asset to The Knightly News! Ms. Kristine Brown
- From day one, Aiden Levy has set himself up for great success, both by rallying tablemates to get more involved in a brief discussion regarding our favorite classes and offering insightful commentary regarding our foray into analyzing rhetoric. Furthermore, he went above and beyond to demonstrate a bit more about who he is for our symbolic representation assignment. Mr. Bobby Nelson
- We are so impressed with you, Suh Jin Yun! Thank you for your thoughtful contributions to class discussions and for adding to our class community. Ms. Nikki Lehman and Ms. Kristin Dreyer
