UPDATE: FH Weekly Update - 9/6/21

Yesterday's newsletter contained the incorrect time for our PTA Back to School Picnic. It has been updated to reflect the correct time (5:30-7:30)

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

We hope you and your family had a spectacular and safe 4-day Labor Day weekend. On their Twitter page, our PTA shared this brief post about the history of Labor Day - you may wish to share it with your children.

As we begin our third week of school, we wanted to share how impressed and proud we are of our students and staff this year. Mr. Kopacz and I have been able to stop by all the classrooms, visit with the students at lunch, and see them shine during specials. We appreciate our parents’ support in the daily symptom check prior to sending children to school. If you are ever unsure if your child may attend in person, please call our health clinic or reach out to us directly. We are in this together for the safety of our students!

And finally... we need your help! We hope to begin outdoor lunches for students now that our weather has improved. We are looking for parents who are willing to assist staff supervising outdoor lunch. If you are available on certain days of the week, please complete this form. We will send you additional details.

We look forward to seeing you at our Back to School Picnic on Friday!

Wishing you a wonderful week, and Shanah Tovah to our families celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project Intro Week: Other People Mindset!

The Positivity Project is back!

This week, we are focusing on the heart of the Positivity Project, the Other People Mindset. This idea is built on five important principles:

  • We can identify and appreciate the good in others
  • We support others when they struggle
  • We are present and give others our attention
  • We cheer on others’ successes
  • We know that our words and actions affect others.

            “We rise by lifting others.”

                   ~Robert Ingersoll

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • Why is this important?
  • How do I live with this mindset?
  • How do other people live with this mindset?

Health & Safety Guidance

The health and safety of our families is our utmost priority. Here is some information from FCPS that gives tips on how to stop the spread, as well as explains the process we use when there is a positive case.

FCPS Health and Safety Guidance Webpage

Our Health and Safety Guidance Webpage has the most current information about our layered prevention strategies, what happens if your child becomes ill at school, and the process when there is a pause in instruction or activities after a positive COVID case.

Flow Chart for Notification of a Positive Case

We know the pause process is frustrating and sometimes confusing for families. The flowchart below is posted to the FCPS website and explains the exact process FH, FCPS, and the Fairfax County Health Department use to identify and notify close contacts after a positive case.

COVID Dashboard

All FCPS COVID-19 cases are reported via a dashboard posted to the FCPS website and updated daily. While this does not outline the number of students quarantining, it has tabs showing total number of cases, cases by school and cases by date.

BIG PROPS to KRUTI VERMA for putting this together for us!

Could you spare an hour and help us with the Back to School Picnic on Friday, Sept. 10th? We need help at a few different stations. Many hands make light work! There will also be an opportunity to paint the new garden fence for kids and parents before the picnic (a great way to occupy time from after school until the picnic begins at 5:30)! Sign up genius is here to volunteer to help. Contact Kruti Verma or info@freedomhillpta.org for questions.

Join us for our first PTA meeting of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 14th at 8pm. We'll be meeting virtually so join us here or call 301-715-8592 with meeting id: 934 6979 4615.

Do you know the PTA is a volunteer-driven organization that helps with programs, activities and traditions NOT provided by FCPS? Things like: capital improvements (new water filling stations), Reading Materials (replenishing classroom libraries), Teacher Wishlists, Technology needs (like Peardeck) and many events through out the year? We have a membership goal to raise $10,000 this year. Do what you can and become a member. See Family Forms details here and Teacher discount form here. See our cool thank you gifts in our Family Forms. You can sign up online at http://www.pay4schoolstuff.com too!

Save the date for Tuesday, Sept. 21st to take a night off of cooking. Join us at Foster's Grille and Ben & Jerry's in Vienna on Maple Avenue for a Family Dinner Out. Take Out or Dine In both accepted to help contribute to FHES PTA. Be sure to say Freedom Hill! Time for Foster's is 11am-9pm and Ben & Jerry's is 4-9pm. Both located in the Vienna Shopping Center near 138 and 136C Maple Ave. Thank you to Jen King for planning this!
