Lemon Road Community News 9.3.21

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Class Spirit Day

Thank you for a second week of school focused on learning, engagement, relationships, and creativity. Mr. Birge and I have been able to stop by all the classrooms, visit with the students at lunch, and see them shine during specials. We appreciate our parents’ support in the daily symptom check prior to sending children to school. If you are ever unsure if your child may attend in person, do not hesitate to reach out to me, Mr. Birge, or Ms. Monts in the morning.

Lemon Road remains committed to utilizing our full campus to ensure a safe lunch for all lions. Thank you to our parents who volunteered the past week and the donations of patio umbrellas and tents! Please consider signing up to help us with lunch any day you have time: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D4AAFA92EA3F85-lemon. We continue to look for a responsible adult to be paid to support us daily with lunch. If you are interested in working 10:30 – 1:30, please contact Mr. Birge at mbirge@fcps.edu.

We are excited to resume our after school enrichment programming - a partnership between the LRES PTA and Baroody.  Registration is open for the fall sessions and closes Friday, September 15.  Click this link to register your child for a session: bc-ffx-lemonroad.jumbula.com

Have a great Labor Day weekend, we look forward to seeing your children on Tuesday ~ Mrs. Castillo

Student Rights & Responsibilities

SRR

The Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable and supportive school environment. All students will have the handbook on their laptop and parents can access the SR&R here. Starting this school year, parents/guardians with a ParentVUE account can download and digitally sign the SR&R in ParentVUE. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account, regardless of relationship to the student, will see the SR&R upon login to PVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed. The SR&R Parent/Guardian signature sheet is due by October 29. More information about the SR&R is available online.

Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons

Visualization

Ms. Straw, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART), will be teaching Critical and Creative Thinking (CCT) to all classes this school year. CCT strategies are designed to provide all K-12 students opportunities to develop critical and creative thinking skills and move towards a deeper understanding of content. Critical thinking and creative thinking are interrelated processes essential to problem solving. These CCT strategies can be applied to any content area to support the development of skills and understanding.

This month, Ms. Straw is focusing on the CCT skill of visualization. Visualization opens up student thinking by using sensory information to stimulate the imagination. Research studies have shown that visualization greatly increases the level and depth of comprehension of both spoken and written words. Visualization can be a powerful strategy for helping students set goals, picture the steps that need to be taken, consider alternatives, and visualize a plan to achieve their goals. Ask your student what they transformed into something new!

Eco-Schools USA Bronze AND Silver Awards for Exceptional Achievement in Educating for Sustainability

Silver

LRES’ Eco Defense Squad actions in 2020-2021 earned recognition from the international Eco-Schools USA program.

Lemon Road ES earned a Bronze Award for our work increasing awareness of places the community could access safely for physical activity during COVID-19 and providing indoor and outdoor workout options. The school was further recognized for reducing waste and increasing community recycling of highlighters/markers through the Crayola ColorCycle program – which will continue this year as well. Thank you to our enthusiastic students and community! This is a terrific start!

School Safety Information

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.  We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page.

  • Know your Security Scenarios video
  • FAQs
  • Parent/Guardian Tips
  • Terms and Procedures for Emergency Response

After reviewing this content, please discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

For questions about safety drills, please contact Mr. Birge at mbirge@fcps.edu.

PTA Fall Festival - Coming Soon!

PTA

The PTA is excited to share that the Lemon Road Fall Festival will return this year and be held on Saturday, September 25 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This year the Fall Festival will be held almost entirely outside and will feature new games and entertainment, live music, and food trucks! The Roarin’ Raffle will also return so be sure to buy your raffle tickets to enter. For those who are new to Lemon Road, the Fall Festival is one of the PTAs biggest fundraisers of the year and the Roarin’ Raffle is a chance for students to earn fun “prizes” like the chance to be Principal or Assistant Principal for a day or a movie and pizza party with their favorite teachers.

Children ages 5 and up need tickets to enter and adults are free. Parents or guardians are required to stay on the premises. The PTA relies on the entire Lemon Road community to make the event a success so be sure to buy your entry wristband, Roarin’ Raffle tickets, and sign up to volunteer on the SignUp Genius.

Other People Mindset - P2

Mindset

This week, we are focusing on the heart of the Positivity Project, the Other People Mindset. This idea is built on five important principles:

  • We can identify and appreciate the good in others
  • We support others when they struggle
  • We are present and give others our attention
  • We cheer on others’ successes
  • We know that our words and actions affect others.

“We rise by lifting others.” ~Robert Ingersoll
