Bonnie Brae Friday Updates
Message From the Principals
Dear Wonderful Bonnie Brae Families,
We again want to thank you so much for all for your support during our return to school. We appreciate how you have stepped up and in to keep our students safe and able to come to school each day. Each day we welcome over 800 students and staff who make Bonnie Brae happy place to learn and grow.
With that said, we also know that our Return To School has been challenging and complex to say the least. We know that you know this too. In this newsletter you will find information about the processes we use to help guide your understanding if someone tests positive for COVID-19 or is identified as a close contact.
Please note that this is the current process that we are following, as guided by FCPS Health Department. As the global pandemic evolves, we will continue to shift our process. When this shift occurs, we will be sure to communicate with you.
We'd like to remind everyone that our first step of the FCPS layered mitigation process is the daily self-check that parents are asked to perform each day before sending their children off to school. Parents should be looking for the following symptoms:
- Fever/chills/temperature
- Stomachache
- Cough
- Diarrhea
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- New loss of taste/smell
- Headache
Should your child have any of these symptoms, please do not send them to school and seek an evaluation by a healthcare provider as necessary. As you may be aware, students who exhibit any of the above symptoms and are sent to our CARE room will be sent home to isolate for up to 10 days. This not something that anyone wants. We all want our students to be in school, but school must be a safe place for everyone. Please help to keep everyone safe by completing the daily self-check.
Please see the Return to School Guidance from the Fairfax County Health Department that we follow should your child be sent home from the Care Room with symptoms.
Follow the Return to School Guidance below if your child was sent home with any of the above symptoms:
If NO close contact with COVID-19 case:
-
Positive COVID-19 test – Isolate by staying home until 10 days from onset of symptoms, no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND symptoms are improving: or 10 days from day of positive test if never had symptoms.
-
Negative COVID-19 Test – Stay home until no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND symptoms are improving.
-
No testing done and no alternate diagnosis – Isolate by staying home until 10 days onset of symptoms, no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND symptoms have improved.
-
Alternate diagnosis by a healthcare provider that explains symptoms – Stay home until no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND symptoms are improving or longer as per provider’s instructions.
If close contact with a COVID-19 case:
-
Positive COVID-19 test – Isolate by staying home until 10 days from onset of symptoms, no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND symptoms are improving: or 10 days from day of positive test if never had symptoms.
-
Negative COVID-19 test or no testing done – Quarantine by staying home until 14 days from the date of last exposure, no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND symptoms have improved.
We hope this information is helpful. If we can help clarify in any way, or if you would like any other help from us, please do not hesitate to contact us asap.
Have a great weekend!

Positivity Project
This year students and staff will be participating in the Positivity Project at Bonnie Brae Elementary. The mission of the Positivity Project is to empower students to build positive relationships by: understanding, and appreciating and living out the 24 character strengths in all of us. Over the course of this year students will learn and understand 24 different character strengths that help define who we are and how we interact with others.
This week's focus is Curiosity!
You like exploration and discovery- you ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything. Albert Einstein said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity exists for a reason.”

Jewish Holidays: September 2021
This month, Jewish people throughout the world will be observing what is known as the High Holy Days or High Holidays. Most Jewish families will celebrate these holidays, which are often thought of as the holiest days of the year.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins Monday evening, September 6. Some Jews celebrate for one day (through Tuesday night September 7) and some celebrate two days (through Wednesday night September 8). Most Jews celebrate with large family meals and services. During the pandemic synagogues services have been a combination of in-person outside, inside with social distancing, or virtual. Feel free to greet your Jewish friends and colleagues with “Happy New Year,” or try Hebrew with “Shana Tova.”
Yom Kippur, a more somber holiday, begins on Wednesday night, September 15, through Thursday night September 16. It includes fasting and prayer. Many people of the Jewish faith will refrain from eating for the full 25 hours of the holiday. Feel free to greet your Jewish friends and colleagues with, “Have a meaningful and easy fast.”
