Virginia Growth Assessment - Notification of Testing

The Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a new test required for students in grades 3-8. The state legislature introduced this requirement to measure student growth and progress within the school year in reading and mathematics.

This year students in both grades 7 & 8 will take the VGA for Reading on Tuesday, September 28 from 7:30-10:30 am and all students except those enrolled in Algebra or Geometry will take the VGA for Math on Thursday, September 30 from 7:30-10:30 am. Please try to avoid making appointments on these dates as we have limited time for makeup testing

For more information about the VGA, please click on the links below.

School Owned Laptops

We have given out a laptop to each student who wanted one and we are now all out of laptops, due to increased enrollment this year. We anticipate getting a few more laptops, however the supply will be limited and will only be used to replace/repair broken laptops.

Please remind your child to bring their CHARGED laptop to school with them every day. We do NOT have any computers available to loan students who forget theirs for the day.

Middle School Matters

Back to School Night

We had about 350 families participate in Back to School Night. We are so grateful for your patience as Ms. Conley navigated some technical difficulties. Below is the link to the slide deck shared and the recording from the evening.

Be on the lookout for more personalized learning opportunities to familiarize yourself with Schoology and SIS in the next couple of weeks.

Interested in participating in the WIMS Parent/Guardian Book Club? We will be reading Middle School Matters by Phyllis Fagell.  Please complete this form if you would like to participate. The first book club date will be in December. The date will be announced in mid-November so we have a better understanding of what type of forum for the book study we will be able to host.

Free and Reduced Lunch Application

This year breakfast and lunch are free to all students. However, if your family qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch, it is important to still complete the application so that families are able to qualify for the other free or reduced fees, such as student fees for supplies for elective classes.

  • The free and reduced meals application includes an online application for parents/guardians to submit the application electronically for faster processing.
  • The online free and reduced meals application is available in the following languages (to change the language of the application click on the Language link in the top right of the screen): English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, French, Vietnamese, and Korean
  • The online application can be completed on mobile devices.
  • If an email address is provided, notification will be e-mailed regarding approval.

To access the form, please click the following the application LINK.

Label Everything with Your Child’s Name!

We are already experiencing things being left behind in classes and during lunch. To ensure you are getting your belongings back home each day, it is VERY important that you LABEL EVERYTHING! If there is a name on an item, it is much easier to get things back to the correct student.

As we get into fall and winter weather (it will eventually get here), please be sure to label your child’s jackets, coats, hats, and any other outerwear they will bring to school. Many students will have the same jackets - so a label makes identifying who an item belongs to so much easier. Please LABEL EVERYTHING!

Digital Resource Consent

Thank you to all parents/guardians who have already submitted the Digital Resource Consent (DRC) this year! If you have not yet done so, please visit Irving’s DRC page on our website and complete the form today!

. Please DO NOT request a locker if you have already requested a locker for this year.

Away for the Day

Irving MS will be an Away for the Day School again this year. Students will be required to turn phones/electronic devices off and keep them in their backpacks from 7:30-2:15.

  •  Returning to school in the building provides an opportunity to reacclimate to school, peers, and communicating in person. We found students were more successful and focused in school with the implementation of Away from the Day two years ago and look forward to more success with this program again this year.

Student Lockers

All student lockers were assigned this week for students who requested a locker. If you would like to request a locker for your child, please complete this form

A reminder: all students have been assigned a PE locker and an Orchestra or Band locker for their instrument if appropriate.
