Arrival and Dismissal Update

kiss and ride

Thank you to all families for your patience and flexibility during arrival and dismissal. We are excited to say that our routines are getting stronger and our time has shortened for both bus and Kiss and ride times. Here are a few reminders for continued success and smooth transitions:

  1. If you are bringing your child to school, please follow the Kiss and Ride line of cars for a safe drop off.
  2. Our tardy bell rings at 8:40. If you arrive past this time, you need to park your car and walk your child into the office.
  3. Thank you for reviewing with your child their bus number or Kiss and Ride Number, as well as reminding them to listen for their number to be called.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

This year K-12 students in FCPS will participate in a Social-Emotional Learning Screener. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions (CASEL, 2020). You can find more information about the screener and the importance of social-emotional learning here. This screener will be a useful tool for us here at Parklawn to learn how to best support our students and school community. A letter will be coming home in your Tuesday folder this week with more information. (If you choose to opt your child out of the SEL Screener, please return the included opt-out form no later than October 8th.)

Student Laptop Distribution

laptops

All students, PreK-5 have been assigned a laptop for the 2021-2022 school year. This is exciting for in-school learning, as well as for any learning from home needs should they arise. The FCPS  expectation is as follows:

  1. PreK: Leave laptops at home
  2. Grades K-2: Leave laptops at school
  3. Grades 3-5: Carry laptops home and to school each day

When laptops are home, please be sure they are charged for use the next day. If a circumstance arises where a student in grades K-2 needs a laptop at home for asynchronous or virtual learning, we will work with the family for pick up at the school.

Kicking off the Year with the Positivity Project!

P2

Parklawn Elementary continues to be a partner school with the Positivity Project Movement for the 2021-2022 school year. The mission of the Positivity Project is to empower our students to build positive relationships –by understanding, appreciating, and living out 24 character strengths in us all. We will explore the 24 character strengths throughout the year, as well as learn more about th Other People Mindset. Each week our Panther Press will highlight our P2 focus at school, so that you can also have conversations at home. The week of September 5-11 is the Other People Mindset Intro Week!
