Cub Run Virtual Back to School Night Thursday, Sep 2, 2021
We are excited to roll out our virtual Back to School Night this year at Cub Run! This event will look different this year, with both asynchronous and synchronous components:
- Back to School Night Google Site: Start here, where you’ll find video introductions from all of our staff, as well as information specific to grade levels. You’ll also find back-to-school greetings from our FCPS School Board members, information about the PTA, and lots more. If you are able, please take a look at the videos of the staff members who work with your child (classroom teacher, specialists, Special Education, School Counselors, etc.), their FAQ sections, and Back to School Night slides. Feel free to watch with your children!
- Live Zoom Meet-the-Teachers from 6:30-7:30 PM on Thursday, September 2nd: Look for an email from your child’s teacher with his or her Zoom link, as well as an email to all Cub Run Families from Principal Lorenzi today with Zoom links for all teachers, including Specialists. Our teachers will be logged into their “Zoom rooms” tomorrow evening to answer any questions that you may have after viewing their grade-level presentations on the Google site. Mrs. Lorenzi and Mrs. Haider will also have a link for families who have any questions, including questions regarding health/Covid protocols.
Positive Covid Test Results: What Families Need to Know
We know that families have many questions about the process that unfolds following a positive Covid case from a student, staff member, or visitor at Cub Run. Below are some frequently asked questions:
What will happen if there is a student who tests positive for COVID in my child’s class?
If a student tests positive and was at school during the infectious period (within 48 hours of onset of symptoms), we will alert the entire school community. Seating assignments throughout the school day are reviewed, and potential close contacts to the student who has tested positive for Covid-19 are identified. If your child is considered a potential close contact, we will notify you immediately. If your child is currently at school, we will ask you to come pick your child up from school.
What determines if a student is a potential close contact to a known positive case?
The following are examples of individuals who would be considered a potential close contact:
- Students wearing masks who were less than 3 feet from a student case for 15 minutes or more in a school day
- Students not wearing masks who were 6 feet or less from a student case for 15 minutes or more in a school day
- Students masked or unmasked who were within 6 feet or less of a staff case for 15 minutes or more in a school day
What happens if my child is determined to be a potential close contact by FCPS staff?
Out of an abundance of caution, any student who is identified as a potential close contact by FCPS staff will have to stay home from school until the Health Department completes its contact tracing and closes the investigation. In our experience at Cub Run, this process has been taking several days. While your child is at home, your child’s teachers will provide assignments for them to access. If your child does not have their computer at home, we will work with you to pick it up at school. Please note that FCPS staff can only identify potential close contacts; we are not identifying students who have to quarantine. Only the Health Department can determine if your child needs to quarantine through their contact tracing investigation.
Case Information
The health department will contact you directly and will direct the appropriate students to quarantine. The school will notify the entire community when the contact tracing is complete. Once the Health Department has completed their investigation, we will also invite any student who was staying home per FCPS staff direction and who has not been required to quarantine per the Health Department to return to school.
The idea of your child being considered a potential close contact or having a classmate who tests positive for COVID can be upsetting. The current FCPS protocols will mean that families may be impacted unexpectedly because they have to be home with their child. My hope is that sharing information about the current process will help alleviate some of the stress that is inherent in this situation. I also hope that if we all work together, we can minimize the number of positive cases at school, which will minimize the number of students who must remain at home.
Keep your child home from school with any symptoms that are COVID-like.
The most important way you can help as a parent is to keep your child(ren) home if they present with any illness or symptoms that are associated with COVID, i.e., runny nose, coughing, headache, stomach ache. If you keep your child home, and they are feeling better the next day, then they do not need documentation from a medical provider to return. However, if your child comes to school and presents with symptoms, they will be placed in the Care Room and will be sent home. Your child must then be seen by a medical provider in order to return to school. If your child has any known conditions with symptoms that might present as Covid symptoms, please be sure that your child’s school health form is updated so that our staff can differentiate between expected symptoms related to a health condition (such as allergies), and symptoms that are new.
Parents, caregivers or guardians are strongly encouraged to monitor their children for symptoms of infectious illness every day through a home-based symptom screening and students who are sick should not come to school. Please consider the questions in the Health Screening Questionnaire each morning before sending your child to school. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions, please keep your child home.
Keep your child home if you suspect your child may have come in contact with someone who has COVID.
Please be overly cautious and keep your child home if you are awaiting COVID test results.
Communicate quickly with us.
As soon as you have information that your child has COVID or likely has it, please let us know. We only reveal the name of a student to the health department. The sooner we have information, the sooner we can alert the health department to begin the contact tracing.
Send your child to school with a properly fitted mask.
Aligned with guidance provided by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has established procedures for the use of face coverings/masks (cloth or disposable) for students, staff, and visitors designed to mitigate the spread of COVID. This document highlights the types of masks that are appropriate for students to wear to school.
Thank you for your support, flexibility and patience. I appreciate your partnership to help stop the spread of COVID.
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2)
Teachers will be administering the DRA2 in grades 1 &2 and the DRA2-Progress Monitoring in grades 3-6 from September 8th - September 15th. These assessments will enable teachers to differentiate instruction in order to meet the needs of each student.

Kiss and Ride at Cub Run
Many thanks to our Cub Run families for their patience with the new Kiss and Ride number system! On our first day with the new system, the Kiss and Ride process took 40 minutes. As of today, it’s now only taking 20 minutes thanks to your cooperation. You all have done a wonderful job having your numbers displayed on the passenger side of your windshield, which helps the process to move along smoothly! If you don’t have a number yet, please fill out this form and we will assign you a number. Even if you will only use Kiss and Ride a few times this year, having a number displayed is much quicker than writing down names and grade levels for those without numbers. Best of all, this new process is a much safer method of getting over 100 students into the correct vehicles! We appreciate your partnership in this process.
