Franklin Families and Students,
Good afternoon! Thank you for all of the support that helped us get off to a great start. Our staff AND students have collaborated all week as they established warm and welcoming classroom communities, they got the ball rolling on positive relationships and connections, and they started putting in place routines and procedures that will set us all up for success this year. I am very proud of both groups.
We also distributed nearly 1000 laptops to our students, helped our new students find their way around the building, and had our very first Team Time event of the year this afternoon. It was a busy week, but a good one!
It was a privilege to have our students back in the building this week and we are excited about the year ahead.

Franklin MS Back to School Night on Monday, September 13 at 6:00 PM
We hope that you can join us for our Back to School Night event on Monday, September 13. This will be a virtual event via Zoom that features a synchronous presentation from the FMS Leadership Team. This session will be recorded and shared with the community if you are unable to join us at 6:00 PM. The session will feature updates about Schoology, Health and Safety Procedures, our Interdisciplinary Teams, After-School Activities, and supports that will be in place for your student this year. Additionally, we will be sharing Welcome Videos from all of our teachers that you can watch with your student. We hope that you can join us at this virtual event!

Return to School Forms
Beginning of the Year forms are located at the link below and may be completed and submitted as soon as possible. Most of the forms are electronic.
Franklin MS School Opening Information and Forms
Paper copies of the forms are available in the office. Please come to Door 1 weekdays between 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM to pick up a set of paper forms.
Student Laptops
All students should have received their FCPS laptop during the first week of school. Please remind your child to treat it as a “work computer” and refrain from putting stickers on it. For technology support, please visit the Technology Support for Families website. If something is wrong with the computer, a student or parent can submit a ticket from that link. You can also learn more about Schoology, Zoom, Google Workspace, and other online tools we will be using this year.
It is important that all families submit the Digital Resources Consent Form prior to September 1 so that students will be able to access resources and activities needed for their classes. Review the tools used at Franklin and reach out to Anne Baker with any questions.
Attendance Information
Absences or Late Arrivals
Please report absences and late arrivals by calling the Attendance LIne at: (703) 904-5151 or emailing FranklinMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu by 9:00 AM. You may also use the Online Attendance Form located on the Franklin MS website.
Early Dismissal
To minimize disruptions to the classroom learning environment, please have your student bring a note to the main office detailing the student name, date, time you will pick up your student and the reason for the early dismissal. A pass will be issued to your student to be released from class. Please do not use the attendance line to request early dismissal.
Transportation Information
As we prepare for children to come to school and go home on buses this fall, we ask you to be aware of possible adjustments to routes and scheduling. Franklin MS will keep you informed of changes as soon as information is available. Your patience and understanding as we make adjustments is appreciated. Franklin MS and FCPS are working hard to address the need for drivers and plan for transportation in a way that has the least impact on students. Please call the Area 3 Transportation Office at: (703) 249-7000 with questions about transportation for your student or to report late buses.
Library Updates
Students may come to the library on their way to class in the morning from 7:10 AM to 7:25 AM to check out books. In the coming weeks all classes will visit the library with their English teachers for library orientation and to check out books. Students will also learn more about how the library can help with reading, research and getting involved. Please send questions or comments to Mrs. Ruffle.
Health and P.E. Uniform Information
We are so excited to be resuming our traditional P.E. units this Fall. Franklin Middle School’s physical education attire consists of shirt, shorts, socks, and supportive tennis shoes with tied laces (absolutely no crocs, sandals, boots, slippers, wedges, or platform shoes). We will be very active with the lessons, so we ask students to be prepared with the safest attire. P.E. uniforms are not required to be purchased. Athletic clothing for P.E. is necessary to participate safely.
PE Uniform Cost
Shirt ($5.50) + Shorts ($9.00) = $14.50
Towel Service (optional) = $15.00
**Payments may be made online on the Franklin MS website or the FCPS website. Go to “MySchoolBucks” and under the “School Store” tab you will find a “Browse All Items” tab. You will find the uniforms link there.
Distribution of uniforms will begin after Labor Day. If you are unable to pay online, payments may be delivered to your child’s PE teacher by cash or check, made payable to Franklin Middle School starting next week.
