Happy First Friday!

We had a marvelous opening week at KJMS! Here are a few highlights.

  • Each morning has a great start with our Kiss-n-Ride drop-off; we have it down to 13 minutes! Thank you for understanding that unloading does not begin until 7:10 AM. See below for more details.
  • The days were full of students laughing and meeting new people as they learned their way around the halls of KJMS. They are doing a fabulous job following our safety protocols.
  • We learned many interesting facts about our namesake, Katherine Johnson, as we celebrated her birthday with each student getting a new KJMS t-shirt.
  • Today, our students began eating outdoors at our picnic tables during all 4 lunch shifts. This is a nice space outside for students to enjoy this lovely weather. There are shaded areas to enjoy, so students are able to bring a small towel in their book bags to sit in the grass, although there are 8 large picnic tables.
  • Our gym floor renovations are complete as of this afternoon! Beginning on Monday, students will be able to enjoy breakfast in the cafeteria. Car-riders who would like to eat should plan to arrive by 7:15 to have time to eat. If your student would like to eat breakfast, please encourage them to proceed immediately to the cafeteria when they arrive.

Have a super weekend,

Dr. Tammy Silipigni

Eagle Fest Student Volunteers

Last week, we had several wonderful student volunteers who came to help guide our new and returning Eagles and their families during Eagle Fest. The volunteers were from our Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). This gave these students the opportunity to use their knowledge and leadership skills they have learned through these programs.

“Back to Basics” Series

Attendance Procedures and Kiss and Ride

One of the best indicators of student success is tied to consistent school attendance. Students who are chronically absent missing more than 10% of the school year have a greater chance of not performing at grade level. Missing one day becomes twice as hard because of the time and energy needed to catch up.  Of course, there are times when many of us need to be absent due to illness, medical needs, or a family concern. When that happens, you will be informed and prepared to follow up with the front office after watching our “Back to Basics” video this week on attendance procedure. The video is less than three minutes long and will easily guide you through the steps when your child needs to be absent.

We are very pleased with our first week of parents following our Kiss and Ride procedures. However, in the spirit of safety, it is important to remind parents to follow the directions of staff in the morning and/or afternoon. In the afternoon, once your student is in the car, we are able to allow parents to pull around other cars that are waiting. In the morning, NO cars are allowed to pull around and pass other cars to keep all students safe as they exit cars. With new procedures in place, we are finding that the morning Kiss and Ride line moves quickly, so to keep students safe in the morning, cars should stay in line and pull forward at the direction of staff.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

If you have already provided these forms, there is no need to complete them again.  However, if there is a change, please re-submit the form(s) with the updated information.

The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE -71) Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) Emergency Care Information provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

Families, We Need Your Consent

for Select Digital Resources

At Katherine Johnson Middle School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://johnsonms.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to Kelsea Owens (kfowens@fcps.edu) if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Caring Culture at KJMS

All FCPS Schools are required to create a School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP) and set goals around student achievement, access and opportunity, and caring culture. At KJMS, we use student survey data to find out how we are doing regarding Caring Culture. We plan to survey students during TA (Teacher Advisory) in September, January, and May. Click here for a preview of the Caring Culture Survey and click here if you do NOT want your student to participate in the survey. KJMS also supports the Caring Culture initiative and goals through wellness education and wellness screeners. Families will receive more information about this in the weeks to come.

Parent Volunteers Needed for Screening of Vision/Hearing in September

Each year, State law requires that we do a vision and hearing screening for all 7th graders. Due to the school closure and COVID restrictions last year, we were unable to screen all 7th graders. Therefore, this year, we will screen all 1,000+ students. To do this, we need the help of many parent volunteers to help us execute the tasks smoothly. All training is on the job; you only to be willing to lend a hand. All volunteers, vaccinated or not, must wear a mask during the volunteer time. Thank you for helping us check up on all of our Eagles in this important way.  To sign up, complete the following Vision/Hearing Volunteer form.
