Glasgow Community Gazette - August 22

Powell

Glasgow Community:

What a whirlwind this summer has been!  Teachers were back in the building last week getting classrooms set up, planning for the school year!  Part of our Teacher Return Week was highlighted on WUSA9. If you didn’t catch it check out the story here! This week we will welcome your students back to school, and we are SO EXCITED to have them back in the building!

A quick checklist for you and your student as we prepare to return:

  • Have you turned in all requested documentation for enrollment?  We still have many families who are missing essential documents. If you are missing documents, you should have received notices from our registrar’s office. Additionally, 7th graders are all required to have immunizations for TDAP and the meningococcal vaccine. Missing requested documents or immunizations will cause your child’s enrollment at Glasgow Middle School to be withdrawn. Please send documents and immunizations to school with your child, or scan and email them to Student Services at cpramos@fcps.edu.
  • Have your students who are 12 years old and older received the COVID vaccine?  While not required to attend school, it is highly recommended.  Scroll down for some information about where vaccines are being offered.
  • Mark your calendar for Back to School Night which will take place on September 1st, 2021 from 6pm to 8pm. We will also have an optional community resource fair that will take place from 5 to 6pm. Also, Labor Day Break is September 3-6th, 2021.

On Thursday evening we got a snapshot of what the building will be like on Monday when we welcomed close to 2,000 students and families! We saw many new and familiar faces, and it was great to see our students so excited to return to school in-person. A HUGE thank you to everyone who stayed after school to help pull this off! Also, thank you to Brittany Crumbling for organizing the logistics.

Lastly, if you have any questions, concerns, compliments, or observations, please let me know. You can also contact the associated teacher, counselor, or administrator for your child for information. I am still doing weekly home visits to our families, so if your family would like me to visit your home. Please email me (vlpowell@fcps.edu) and we can coordinate a date.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell,  Principal

Important Information

What Bus Will My Child Ride? - You should have found out your student's bus information last week around the 19th of August. You can also find your bus information in SIS ParentVUE or StudentVUE. When using the ParentVUE or StudentVUE mobile app, click on Student Info, scroll down, and click on “Additional Information.”

Helpful Links: Here Comes the Bus is an app that allows you to track the location of your child’s school bus. MySchoolBucks allows you to add funds to your child’s account for meals, and student fees.

Student Drop Off - Parents who drop off their student to school via Kiss & Ride, should do so by 7:15am. Announcements will be at 7:25am and class begins at 7:30am. Keep in mind that congestion and backup can be significant, causing your student to be late to their class if you drop off your student after 7:15am.

Glasgow Fall Open House Feedback - We were excited to have welcomed almost 2,000 students and family members to Glasgow at our Fall Open House this past Thursday. If you attended the event, we would appreciate your feedback. You can submit feedback here: Glasgow Fall Open House - Feedback Form

How to Report an Absence - If your child is sick or will be absent for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible by reporting an absence. Form submissions are monitored throughout the day by our office staff and your child’s attendance will be updated in SIS for our teachers. You can find the form at the bottom of our Glasgow homepage. You can use this direct link also.

Student Schedules - Student schedules went live in SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE for all FCPS secondary students at 6:00am on August 19th. If you or your child would like to request a schedule change, please complete this form no later than August 27th. Schedule changes will be extremely limited and must be approved by the director of student services.

Required Forms - All students are required to have Emergency Contact Information and Health Information updated each fall. Login to ParentVUE to update Emergency Contact Information. Click here for instructions. Forms will also be distributed through Panther Time this Tuesday.

ParentVUE - Sign up for ParentVUE if you have not already done so. ParentVUE allows you to access your child’s grades, schedule, attendance, and bus information. Sign up here. You should have received an activation code in the mail last week. For questions related to ParentVUE, please contact Dana Rivas, registrar, at dhrivas@fcps.edu

School Supplies -  In the first days of school, teachers will communicate with students regarding any specific school supplies they will need. Glasgow does not provide a standard list of school supplies for all students as supply requirements for each course will vary. All students will be issued a laptop again for this coming school year.

Summer Reading Celebration - While we look forward to seeing students on August 23, summer doesn't officially end until September 21. As we head into the last month of summer, we encourage students to participate in Glasgow's Summer Reading choice board, including ways to try new recipes, get active, and find ways to find the right book for every reader. Check out the choice board at bit.ly/GMSsummer We look forward to celebrating our readers at the end of September!

Free and Reduced Cost Meals - Did you know that free and reduced price meal application forms need to be completed EVERY year? For more information, please click here.

Glasgow Back to School Night - September 1, 2021; 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Back to School Night is an opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with all of their student’s teachers, counselors, and administrators. This year, in person! Glasgow Panthers and their families will rotate through students’ schedules to meet each of their teachers in their classrooms. In case you’re not able to attend, we will also post videos on our Glasgow homepage that introduce families to their child’s teachers and the classes they teach. We will also have a community resource fair from 5 to 6pm prior to Back to School Night where local organizations will have booths set up to share resources and information for our students and families.

Parent Consent Needed: Digital Resources, YouTube: YouTube provides access to high quality educational videos that support FCPS instructional programs. In order to strengthen our YouTube controls and limit access to non-educational content, we are offering the ability for students to log onto YouTube with their FCPS Google account. With this additional layer of protection, FCPS will be able to implement stricter controls on videos available for student use in educational settings.

Starting September 1, 2021, parental consent will be required for students to access YouTube. Students with parental consent will experience strict filtering of YouTube videos to protect them from inappropriate content when logged in to their FCPS Google Account.

With this parent consent, students will be able to log on to YouTube and access educational videos approved by FCPS staff.

Without parental consent, students will not be able to access YouTube when signed in to Chrome or Edge with their FCPS Google account. In addition, students without parental consent will not be able to access videos approved by FCPS staff, unless those videos are embedded by a teacher into a Google Workspace product (such as a Google Slides presentation or Google Site). For more detailed information, review the FCPS Guide to Student YouTube Access.

Support Justice High School Field Hockey - Justice Field Hockey is partnering with Glory Days in Barcroft Plaza for Dining for Dollars.  Glory Days will donate 10% of proceeds from submitted receipts from August 23-29.  Simply save your itemized receipt (not the credit card slip) and turn it in either in the basket at Glory Days, or the basket in the front office at Glasgow.  Dine-in and take-out orders count.  Contact Stef Vestal (slvestal@fcps.edu) with questions. Thank you for your support!

Student Caseloads: - This year we have arranged our caseloads by grade level. Administrators and counselors work together to support students and families, and if you have any questions or concerns please reach out.
