8/23:

First Day of School - Students should not arrive before  7:10 AM and should be in their classroom by 7:25 AM

Happy Last Friday of the Summer!

EagleFest was a huge success thanks to all of you! We were excited to see the rain hold off until our last session was completed. Many of our families expressed their excitement, nervousness, and anticipation regarding the fall return. Our staff is committed to providing a safe place for all students by complying with all FCPS expectations. Additionally, our students will be sitting in rows during the first weeks of school in order for us to help them learn how to maintain 3 feet of distance as we transition from the 6 feet they observed in the spring.

When your student arrives Monday (please see below for Kiss and Ride procedures if this applies to you), they will go to 1st period. We will give them paper copies of their schedules to use for the first few days. During 5th and 6th blocks, your child will have lunch (details below). Each teacher will tell their 5th and 6th periods their exact lunch time when they see them on Monday and Tuesday respectively. Weather-permitting, we will implement outdoor seating on a rolling basis to accommodate for less students in the cafeteria and safe supervision outside. We will explain this to your students during the first week of school and hope to transition to this option as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support and trust during these uncertain times. As a community, we are rising to the challenge together and are planning for a successful first week of school--complete with a birthday celebration for our namesake, Katherine Johnson!

As always, #fcpsEaglesSoar,

Dr. Tammy Silipigni

“Back to Basics” - Kiss and Ride Procedures.

With students returning to school just a few days away, we wanted to provide you with our safety guidelines for parents who drop off and pick up students from school daily. This is affectionately known as “Kiss and Ride” across the county. Please take a few minutes and watch another “Back to Basics: video about KJMS’s Kiss and Ride Procedures. Just remember, safety first. When parents and students focus on being patient and following the Kiss and Ride directions, then safety becomes the priority.

bus

As we prepare for children to come to school and go home on buses this fall, we ask you to be aware of possible adjustments to routes and scheduling. A national bus driver shortage is impacting FCPS and some routes may be longer or occasionally delayed as we work through the situation. KJMS will keep you informed of changes as soon as information is available. Your patience and understanding as we make adjustments is appreciated. KJMS and FCPS is working hard to address the need for drivers and plan for transportation in a way that has the least impact on students.

You may consider driving, walking, or biking to school while we work through the driver shortage and adjust routes. Car pools or group walks and bikes are also encouraged for those who are able to help relieve pressure on buses. If you plan to walk or bike to school, watch this short video on pedestrian safety with your child.

Find out more about bus routes on our website and download the Here Comes the Bus mobile app.

If you or someone you know has interest in becoming a bus driver for FCPS, now is a great time to come on board! FCPS is offering up to $2,000 in a signing bonus for new bus drivers who meet eligibility requirements and complete the new driver employment criteria. Find out more and apply today!

Eagle Fest 2021

A special thank to all that made this years open house, Eagle Fest a success.  Thank you to the PTA  and the following who helped make this event a warm and welcoming event for all of our Katherine Johnson Families.

Mask Requirements

We begin the new school year with a mask requirement in place for everyone indoors on school properties and buses. Any student who does not comply with the mask requirement, and is not exempt from the requirement as outlined in Regulation 2109.1, will not be allowed to participate in face-to-face learning. Students who refuse to attend school due to a refusal to wear a mask, will receive an unexcused absence. Intentional removal of or refusal to wear a face covering will be treated as a violation of the FCPS dress code policy (Regulation 2613). This could result in an out of school suspension for continued non-compliance.

Please talk with your child before school begins about the importance of wearing masks at school to protect each other against the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19, and the consequences of refusing to wear a mask. I appreciate your help in encouraging students to do their part to contribute to a safe school environment.

MySchoolBucks isn’t just for students; Set up your MySchoolBucks account for easy payment for meals and snacks.

MySchoolBucks isn’t just for students; we can enjoy the ease of an account as well! This year, having a MySchoolBucks account not only means convenience, it helps our cafeteria staff with a unique problem-coin shortage.

The U.S. is experiencing a coin shortage and that extends to FCPS cash registers. By using MySchoolBucks, you can help keep change in cash registers for those who may not be able to use their account and help keep lines moving quickly.

Staff can use their MySchoolBucks accounts to pay for meals and a la carte items in the cafeteria.

Be ready on day one- set up your MySchoolBucks account and memorize your pin. If you have questions about MySchoolBucks, your school’s front office staff can help.

Message from FCPS Food Service

Every student is eligible for one no-cost breakfast and one no-cost lunch each school day. However, if your student would like to purchase additional meals or a la carte items, they will need to pay. The best way to purchase items this year is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account and help them memorize their pin.

Setting up a MySchoolBucks account for your student is especially helpful during the current nationwide coin shortage. FCPS cash registers will have limited coins available at the start of the school year to provide change for cash purchases. Purchases made with MySchoolBucks also keeps lines moving quickly.

Your child may choose to bring their meals and snacks to school this year. FCPS encourages this practice for students who have specific dietary requirements or are particularly picky. Bringing food from home ensures your child will have the meals and snacks they enjoy to fuel their day of learning.

Be ready on day one by setting up your child’s MySchoolBucks account and looking over the menus

Parent Volunteers Needed for Screening of Vision/Hearing in September

Each year, State law requires that we do a vision and hearing screening for all 7th graders. Due to the school closure and COVID restrictions last year, we were unable to screen all 7th graders. Therefore, this year, we will screen all 1,000+ students. To do this, we need the help of many parent volunteers to help us execute the tasks smoothly. All training is on the job; you only to be willing to lend a hand. All volunteers, vaccinated or not, must wear a mask during the volunteer time. Thank you for helping us check up on all of our Eagles in this important way.  To sign up, complete the following Vision/Hearing Volunteer form.

Returning Strong- Two Important Safety Updates

Updated Mask Requirements:

This week, FCPS updated mask requirements for staff. As 99.5% of staff and students begin to return to buildings and the Delta variant continues to see an uptick, FCPS’ universal indoor masking requirement is now extended to everyone

Please note: Governor Northam just announced universal masking indoors for all K-12 schools so FCPS is aligned with the state mandate.

School Supplies

In light of being 1:1 with laptops, the need for school supplies is less than before. Teachers may ask for more specific items once the year starts!

Back to School Forms

Back to School Forms

We continue to use a digital format for our back to school forms. While some documents are purely for informational purposes, other forms are required for the start of school. Please take a moment to access the digital forms on our web site and return those that are applicable. Instructions for updating and returning the forms are listed on the web site.

School Hours

This year, students may begin entering school at 7:10 AM, should be in their first class by 7:25 AM with school beginning at 7:30 AM. School ends at 2:15 PM. Students are invited to stay after school for academic help so long as they are supervised by a teacher, adult sponsor, or coach. Late buses will be provided Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week to support our extensive after school program. If your child has an idea for a program or if you have questions, please reach out to Mr. Julio Dejo (JADejo@fcpe.sdu). Our Bell Schedule can be found on our website.

Lockers

To allow for greater safety with social distancing, we will not assign lockers at the start of the school year. We will re-evaluate this as winter coats come out to see if we need to use lockers. Students will be assigned PE lockers (as they can be spread out more easily when assigning them over two days of classes) to store their PE uniform and shoes.

Teacher Advisory (TA)

For the fourth year, our students will be part of a teacher advisory group that will remain the same for the entire school year. This first part of the 4th period will be dedicated to learning about our SOAR traits, digital citizenship, career guidance, SR&R quarterly meetings, citizenship expectations, and team building activities. Additionally, students will get a brain break of 15 minutes to walk around (outside, weather permitting) and take a tech break. The second half of the class will be dedicated to enrichment and remediation activities that will vary throughout the year.

"Go Paperless" Report Card Option Reminder

Please sign up for “Paperless Report Cards”. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless"  All parents who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed report cards. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all your associated students, no matter what school level. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the report cards for secondary students and progress reports for ES students.
