A Message From The Principal

From The Principal

Family,

Well I guess we are back at it!  As I shared in my official welcome back letter, I am really excited about this year.  While there are some looming uncertainties out there around how the year may ultimately shake out, my focus is making this the best year we have every had as a Family!  I have told many staff members I have hired over the years that it doesn’t matter how long you are with me before you move on.  What matters is that you give me all you have while you are here and that is how I will look at this year. So let’s make this an awesome year together for as long as we can!

I want to begin this message with some news around the Olympics.  Did you know that South County can now claim an Olympic Medalist?  Well if you didn’t, now you do!  Mr. Trevor Stewart from the graduating class of 2016 is a member of the Bronze Medal winning Mixed 4x400 Relay Team!  Read more about this phenomenal accomplishment here and watch the medal winning race here

Now down to business. I wanted to share that for our upper classmen students, that our parking pass process ran into a few road blocks the first couple of days due to an issue with our vendor application which handled the processing. But I am happy to report that we are up and running and students should have no problem getting in now and paying for a parking permit.

For our Senior students, we have closed the process for paying Senior dues at this time. This is where the uncertainty of the year comes into play.  Because we aren’t sure how the year will progress, we are trying to ensure that students don’t pay for things they won’t be able to get out of their Senior experience.  So I am asking that students hold on to their monies at this time (put it in the mattress and don’t spend it) and we will share when we are able to accept monies again. For those Families who have already paid, we will place your money in our mattress for you for the time being.

Folks who may still have fines, books that need to be returned from a previous year, or laptops still out, we will be providing opportunities for students to clear their obligations beginning on August 17th from 9am – 1pm in the main office and on August 19th from 1pm – 3pm in front of Entrance 1.  Students will also have opportunities to return or pay for items during the first week of school during lunches in the main office.  If you have a student who needs to take care of obligations, please be sure to take advantage of this sooner than later because the last thing you want to have to deal with is a bill at the time of graduation.

Every school year we find that a small number of students have signed up for classes because they have wanted to stretch themselves, because they think the class will look good on a transcript, because their best friend enrolled in the class, or well you get what I mean.  These class choices impact our staffing, so we have to be very rigid about making changes.  So now is the time to do so, not a week into the class.  If a student wishes to make a change later in the year, there are three acceptable reasons we will allow this to happen:

  • The student has too many or too few classes
  • Class choice will impact student’s ability to graduate
  • Student was placed in the wrong class by school

Please review your child’s schedule with them and be sure they are where they need to be.  If something doesn’t look right, please reach out to their counselor and have a discussion.  They are more than happy to work with you.

South County High School will host the 2021 Community Connection Event on Thursday, August 12, 2021 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the South County Little League facility located at 9519 Richmond Highway in Lorton.  Administration, school counselors, new staff members, athletic coaches, performing arts directors, a host of other staff members, and our PTSO will be in attendance. During the informal gathering, we will share important information about the resources and various opportunities available to students at South County High School.  We look forward to seeing you on August 12th, and the first 100 guests will receive a free South County High School t-shirt.  Snacks will be provided.

Well, that is all that I have for you until next week, but before I go I feel compelled to say that as we gear up for the return to school, let’s all do our part to help keep our Family safe.  Please take care of yourselves, mask up where you can, and distance when you can.  A school year in person is ours to make and is very much in our control.  I look forward to seeing you all soon in one way or another.  Have a wonderful, restful, and safe weekend!  #OneStallion

Gary
