Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Happy last day of school! Students will be released 2 hours early today (1:20pm).

This year is one none of us will soon forget.  We are so proud of the resilience of our students, their families, and our staff this year.   We are so incredibly grateful for our amazing staff, amazing students, and amazing parents.  At every twist and turn, Stenwood has come together to support one another.  Mister Rogers’ mom always told him, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” There have been so many examples in our Stenwood community.  From the families who coordinated meals for our families who experience food instability to the families who donated tray tables, and so much more.  From teachers who dropped off materials at houses to those who stayed online for those extra minutes just to connect with a student.  There are so many more examples and we can’t thank everyone enough, we see so much love and support in this amazing community!  Come celebrate everyone’s hard work with the PTA sponsored frozen treat drive thru- check your PTA mail for more information!

Today we are saying goodbye to our 6th graders, they are now middle schoolers!  Congratulations to each and every one of them!  We know they are going to go on to do great things at Kilmer and Thoreau.

As we head into summer, if you continue to find library books or other Stenwood property, please plan on returning those items back to us so we can be ready for next school year.  We have a laptop return for our virtual families scheduled on June 21st and June 22st, so please feel free to swing by and return anything else you might have found in your homes then.

Digital Learning Resources Summer Access

The following digital learning resources will be available to all FCPS students through August 6th.  After August 6th, students will regain access at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

Watch this video to see how to access everything in Clever from Schoology.

Summer Practice Books in June

FCPS will be helping to ensure all students have access to learning materials over the summer by providing Summer Practice Books. The books provide suggested activities to support continued learning over the summer break. Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive a digital link.

Books will be mailed home to families in mid to late June.

Students will receive the following books:

  • Pre-kindergarten students will receive one interdisciplinary summer practice book.
  • Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts practice book and one Math practice book by course enrollment. These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer.
  • English learners and students receiving Special Education services may receive additional or customized books.

Please see the Summer Practice Books public webpage for more information and details about customized books for English learners and Special Education students.

Stenwood’s Summer Reading Bingo!

1

Summer will be here before we know it and we want all Stingers to keep reading.  All Stenwood students are encouraged to participate in Stenwood’s Summer Reading Bingo, Stingers are Readers.  Similar to a Bingo game, students are encouraged to spend the summer reading using the Stingers are Readers bingo sheet as a guide.

All students who successfully complete a row, column or the diagonal and return the bingo sheet will receive a Stingers are Readers prize.  All students will receive the Stingers are Readers bingo sheet with the final progress report.  Keep it handy to track reading all summer!

Summer Math Challenge - Opens June 21st

Participate in a free six-week online math skills maintenance program designed for students who have just completed grades 1-8. The 2021 Challenge will support student learning at home and offers daily emails with fun activities and links to educational resources at each student’s ability level. Parents can monitor their child's progress and generate weekly badges and a certificate to celebrate accomplishments. Sign up for the Summer Math Challenge at the Lexile and Quantile Hub.

Laptop and Equipment Collection

ALL FCPS laptops must be turned in for the summer.   All students will need to return any FCPS laptops, chargers, and cases (if in person) for the summer.

Laptop Bee
  • In Person students will be asked to return their laptop during the last week of school.
  • Virtual students will be able to sign up for a slot on either June 21st or June 22nd, more information to come.  If you are a virtual family and your child has not been using your school issued laptop, you can reach out to Mr. Fenton to arrange a time to return it earlier.

Thank You From the Schoology Team

The Schoology Project Team thanks you for your participation in the use of and providing feedback on Schoology during this school year. Your ideas and suggestions continue driving us forward in making improvements. We will continue passing your feedback on to Schoology, as well.

In this challenging year, we hope this was a positive experience for you and your student and the use of Schoology gave you greater insight into your student’s learning.

Thank you and we look forward to working with your school in the future.
