Message From the Principal

Family,

Just a very short note this weekend.  I wanted to simply share that we are almost at the end of this rollercoaster year.  We have been forced to stay away, come in, cover up, put shields between us, learn new ways of learning, learn new time management skills, get over our anxieties, test the limits of our patience, and so much more.  And through all of this, even when it didn’t feel like we were winning, I am here to say that we did win because we made it here. It isn’t to say that things were great the entire time, but I hope that you felt as supported during this year as I had.  For that, I would like to simply say thank you.

This is a reminder that Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities (South County HS included) as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no in-person classes) for students.  Therefore, students will be attending school virtually on this day and teachers will teach through synchronous instruction.

Please be reminded that all laptops will be turned in at some point during the summer.  Students who will be attending summer school will not have to turn in their laptops until after their summer school session. Please ensure that your child has their laptop and charger ready to be turned in.

Last thing, the awards ceremony for the underclassmen and Senior class are virtual this year.  The link for the Senior celebration is here.  The Underclassmen link will come out next week. I truly hope that you enjoy the ceremonies.

Well that is all I have for this week. I hope that you all have a wonderful rest of the weekend.  Graduation is Thursday, June 10th and I am promising no tears from me!  I am very excited about sending this group of highly capable and resilient students on to their next chapter in their lives.  Please take care and continue to be safe.  #OneStallion

Credit Recovery

Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover two high-school course credits. Students may take one course per session. Students should contact their school’s summer program administrator for additional information. Students are eligible to enroll in a credit recovery course if they receive a grade of NM at the end of the school year. Credit Recovery is only for students who failed a course. New Course options are detailed on page 2. This is free of cost and transportation is provided to students that need it. Since the sessions are only three weeks long, it is essential that students are available for the entirety of the session. Information for all summer learning opportunities can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning

Schoology

We are excited to share that students, families, and teachers throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system beginning Summer/Fall 2021.

Here is what you need to know now:

  • Starting in July 2021, we will not use Blackboard 24-7 Learning or Blackboard Collaborate Ultra (BBCU)
  • Schoology has a connected web conferencing tool, Zoom
  • Schoology works with Google Drive
  • You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to login to Schoology: http://bit.ly/FCPSSIS
  • You can learn more about Schoology: https://www.fcps.edu/schoology
  • Parent accounts will be available in mid-August
  • Students will have a Schoology account by June 18, 2021
  • Students will not see any classes until the grading period starts

Schoology is a learning space that enhances communication, collaboration, and personalized learning for students, teachers, and families. As a parent or guardian, you will be able to use Schoology to view:

  • your child's class
  • your child’s assignments and participation
  • your child’s calendar
  • teacher comments, scores, and feedback

We are asking that you:

We look forward to using Schoology along with your SIS/ParentVUE account.

From the Clinic

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. Please call the School Health Aide with any questions at 703-446-1610.

Student Athlete Physical Night

This year, we will team up with Lake Braddock Secondary School and West Springfield High School to host the Annual Student Athlete Physical night AT WEST SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL. We are combining the strengths of Bruins, Stallions, and Spartans to give you a chance to get your physical completed for the 2021-2022 school year as well as support the Athletic Training Programs of all three schools.

This physical night is the sole fundraiser for these programs and the more registrations we have, the more we can provide for your student athletes.

Please put the date and time on your calendar. More information to come!

Date: 07-19-2021

Time: 5:30-7:30

Location: West Springfield High School

Cost/Donation: $50

From the Activities Office:

*NEW* 2021 VHSL Physical Form

The VHSL released a new physical form that all students must have filled out in order to participate in our athletic program for the 2021 – 2022 school year. This form and directions on how it can be turned in to the Activities Office can be found at www.stallionnation.com.

Yearbook Distribution

Yearbooks will be distributed on July 12 in the school cafeteria. Due to COVID, deadlines were pushed back this year in order to cover as much of the school year as possible. Additionally, concurrent schooling makes a traditional distribution not possible. As a result, the distribution will take place over the summer.

On July 12 students can come to the school cafeteria to pick up books they have pre-ordered,  or they can buy a book if they have not pre-ordered one ($85 cash, as supplies last).

Seniors will get to come first at 10 a.m., followed by any underclassmen at 11 a.m.  Depending on COVID restrictions and weather, students may be allowed to socially distance and sign each other’s yearbooks as well.  If you ordered a yearbook and are out of town, there will be additional days to pick up the book after July 12.  If you have not ordered your book yet, you can do so at www.yearbookforever.com.  The only way to guarantee that you get a book is to pre-order, so don’t wait.  Supplies are limited. Books currently cost $75; if you plan to buy a book at distribution they cost $85 cash only.

Questions can be directed to Jennifer Delinski at jldelinski@fcps.edu
