Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Next week is the last week of the 2020-2021 school year! Please be reminded that Tuesday, June 8th is a virtual, synchronous day.  There will be no in-person learning at school this day, but please plan on having your child log on Schoology at 9:05am this morning to their virtual classroom for a full day of online learning!  Additionally, the last day of school is Friday, June 11th and students will be released 2 hours early (1:20pm).  Check out the information from the PTA on how your family can participate in a drive through frozen treat for your child that afternoon!

Mrs. Cole is continuing to collect overdue books, we still have 463 books out!  Virtual families can bring them on the day of your class reunion or drop them off in the front office during the school day.

As we look ahead to next school year, we wanted to share the following staff updates with you:

Next year, we are saying goodbye to...

  • Sharon Meaders (5th Grade teacher) will be moving to Ohio with her husband to his new station with the US Coast Guard.
  • Brian Pousak (Kindergarten teacher) will also be relocating to Ohio.
  • Payal Herendeen (Advanced Academics Resource teacher) will be moving to her daughter’s school in western FCPS as a resource teacher.
  • Lynee Alston (School Counselor) will be switching to part-time next year and will be at an FCPS school closer to home.
  • Michelle Kramer (Substitute School Counselor) accepted a full-time counselor position at an FCPS school.

Digital Learning Resources Summer Access

The following digital learning resources will be available to all FCPS students through August 6th.  After August 6th, students will regain access at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

Watch this video to see how to access everything in Clever from Schoology.

Summer Practice Books in June

FCPS will be helping to ensure all students have access to learning materials over the summer by providing Summer Practice Books. The books provide suggested activities to support continued learning over the summer break. Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive a digital link.

Books will be mailed home to families in mid to late June.

Students will receive the following books:

  • Pre-kindergarten students will receive one interdisciplinary summer practice book.
  • Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts practice book and one Math practice book by course enrollment. These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer.
  • English learners and students receiving Special Education services may receive additional or customized books.

Please see the Summer Practice Books public webpage for more information and details about customized books for English learners and Special Education students.

Laptop and Equipment Collection

ALL FCPS laptops must be turned in for the summer.   All students will need to return any FCPS laptops, chargers, and cases (if in person) for the summer.

Laptop Bee
  • In Person students will be asked to return their laptop during the last week of school.
  • Virtual students will be able to sign up for a slot on either June 21st or June 22nd, more information to come.  If you are a virtual family and your child has not been using your school issued laptop, you can reach out to Mr. Fenton to arrange a time to return it earlier.

Stenwood’s Summer Reading Bingo!

1

Summer will be here before we know it and we want all Stingers to keep reading.  All Stenwood students are encouraged to participate in Stenwood’s Summer Reading Bingo, Stingers are Readers.  Similar to a Bingo game, students are encouraged to spend the summer reading using the Stingers are Readers bingo sheet as a guide.

All students who successfully complete a row, column or the diagonal and return the bingo sheet will receive a Stingers are Readers prize.  All students will receive the Stingers are Readers bingo sheet with the final progress report.  Keep it handy to track reading all summer!

A Note From Mrs. Cole, Our Librarian

Thank you to everyone who purchased books from the book fair!  Our library gets a portion of every sale and I use that money to buy replacements for well-loved books.  Stenwood is lucky to have such a supportive community.

Happy Summer Reading to All!

Stenwood Library Closing

ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE NOW OVERDUE

The Stenwood Library is closing for the year!  Mrs. Cole needs to get back all the library books that have been checked out this year.  Virtual students can return their books to the main foyer at the front of the school during regular school hours.  In-person students can return their books to their classroom library return bins.  If you are uncertain if your student has anything checked out, please contact Mrs. Cole and she’ll be happy to update you.
