Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

Here we are, the beginning of June. We have made it. Next week, we celebrate our seniors with Graduation at Jiffy Lube Live on June 10 and our 7th through 11th grade students finish out the school year.

This month, we celebrate Pride Month, where we remember history, celebrate how far we’ve come in advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and reinvigorate our efforts to continue the fight for equality and against discrimination and hatred.

Below you'll find our year end calendar. Reminder emails were sent out today with detailed information for all students regarding material collection and student laptop return.

Please let us know if you have questions.  We are excited end this school year on a strong and successful note for all our Bruins.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Year End Events Calendar

The 2020-21 Year End Events Calendar has updated information regarding the last two weeks of school. This calendar includes Senior event information, final exam schedule and laptop collection. You should have received an eNotify message earlier today with full details about our last week. That message included important information on laptop and textbook collection.

Students who will be attending academic summer programs for FCPS will have the ability to keep their laptop and turn it in after the summer programs are completed.

GIRLs With Pearls

On June 2, 2021  thirteen Bruins participated in GIRLS with Pearls, the culminating event for the inaugural LBSS  G.I.R.Ls Cohort.  Dr. Phyllis Pajardo, Superintendent for City of Fairfax Schools served not only as the presenter of the pearls but  was also the first speaker for the cohort.

The GIRLs (Girls in Roles of Leadership) cohort was created to serve as a school-wide  foundation dedicated to giving girls access to opportunities as student leaders, women in different career paths, and training sessions on topics like Public Speaking, Dressing for Success, etc.

Ways to Support LGBTQ+ Youth:

  • Educate Yourself (& Your Family). Showing the LGBTQ+ people in your life that you understand and respect their identities is a great first step.
  • Encourage Kids to Find Community Online. Staying connected to the LGBTQ+ community can help youth combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. A number national organizations offer free support groups and social events online.
  • Recommend LGBTQ+ Books and Media. Representation is powerful. Seeing movies, television shows and books with LGBTQ+ characters help kids feel less alone.

Congrats LBSS Odyssey of the Mind

HUGE SHOUT OUT to the members of Lake Braddock’s Odyssey of the Mind teams for their completion of the World Finals Award Ceremony. Here is an overview:

  • The combined Lake Braddock/TJHSST/Homeschool 7th/8th/9th/10th grade team was one of only two Virginia schools in their division to compete at Odyssey of the Mind's 2021 Virtual World Finals, after already taking second place overall in their division at the Virginia state tournament and tying for the 3rd highest raw score for spontaneous problem solving out of every team in every problem and division competing.  The team's Lake Braddock members are Evan Adams, Ella Ridgway, and Jack Smith.
  • The combined Lake Braddock/West Springfield/TJHSST's 9th grade team took was also one of only two Virginia schools in their division to compete at Odyssey of the Mind's 2021 Virtual World Finals, after taking third place overall and first place in spontaneous problem solving in their division at the Virginia state tournament.  The team's Lake Braddock members are Jonathan Barnard, Casey Chen, and Tyler Huang.
  • Lake Braddock's 7th/8th grade team was again one of only two Virginia schools in their division to compete at Odyssey of the Mind's 2021 Virtual World Finals, after already taking second place overall and first place in spontaneous problem solving in their division at the Virginia state tournament (and this was an entirely new team with both new coaches and members).  The team's members are Tobias Ong, Grace Sanchez, Autumn Dunlop, Adithya Pillai, Kara Kwon, and Jenna Nelson.

End-of-Year Meal Service Update

Prior communication stated June 11 as a bus route distribution day, but this is no longer correct. Due to conflicts with early release, bus routes will not run on June 11. Additional meals will be offered June 7-10 and June 14. In addition, we will distribute 7-day meal kits on June 7, 10 and 14 at all of our grab and go and meal kit sites. Details are available on the website: https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/food.

FCPS Receives ESSER III Funding; Community Feedback Wanted

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has received American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funds to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools. The community is invited to speak at a Fairfax County School Board Public Hearing about the ESSER III grant on June 7, at 6 p.m. Sign up to speak. Members of the FCPS community can also submit their input using the FCPS Online Feedback Form. Find more information on the ESSR III grant.
