Message From the Principal

Family,

I wanted to open this week’s message with this thing that is on my heart.  I would like to share my sincere thanks to each of our Families who over the course of the year have been able to share their blessings with us and other Families.  I have been contacted many times by parents offering to purchase groceries, buy teachers or students lunches, donate school items or services, or to gift us with their time.  During a time of crisis and turmoil these gifts are not forgotten and are invaluable.  I am sharing this information to not only thank you all for that which you have done and continue to do, but to remind us all that we are in the midst of so many who are so good down to their core.  And, these fine citizens are doing these things in support of all of our children.  We are in very good company and that is a great feeling to have as we deal with all the “other stuff” going on in our world.

This has been a great week of connecting again with our students and families.  This week I was out three nights celebrating along with our Senior athletes.  And as the protocols have been relaxed around safety measures and folks have felt more comfortable with being out and about, I have been able to see more of you and your children.  It hasn’t just been our current students either.  To see our former students return to visit has also been warming to me and to our teachers.  So as we continue along this path of returning to normalcy, lets continue to be careful, but at that same time, let’s continue to be there for one another.

This week we learned that one of our pillars of strength, Mr. Dana Walker, has been selected to head up the secondary level of Virtual Learning for the upcoming year.  His leadership has been felt both inside and outside of our building and the district leadership has decided to take advantage of his skillset.  This opportunity means that he will be leaving us for SY 21-22.  He is slated to return to us in SY 22-23, but I am not so sure that will happen as these opportunities often lead to more opportunities.  If you have a moment to drop him a line, please do so to let him know how much you have appreciated all he has done for the South County Family.

As we close the year out, I want to remind you once again that if your child is in need of credit recovery services (summer school), that the two 3-week sessions are free this summer.  Please click on this link to view information on registration and other important details.

One other reminder is that all students need to return their laptops and other school resources this year regardless of whether or not they will be returning to school in the fall, or if they will be enrolled in credit recovery this summer.  The laptops have not been touched by our technology team for over a year and to keep them operating at their peak levels, we need to have them back.  Other items such as laptop chargers, textbooks, library books, calculators, manipulatives, etc. all need to come back so that we can inventory our resources and know what we may need to order as we enter the new school year.  Items not returned will be documented and converted to fines unfortunately.  So, please have your children begin to locate those items sooner than later.  Details on opportunities for your child to turn in loaned resources will be forthcoming.

I wanted to give the Theatre students, along with Mrs. Molly Rumberger a huge shout out for the virtual performance they put on this weekend.  I shared how impressed I was with the Senior Skit and Senior Slideshow with Mrs. Rumberger.  Our students surely let it all out and truly shined!  I wish our Senior Theatre students all the best as the move on to their next endeavors whether on stage or not.  They are a talented group and they made all of us proud!  To the underclassmen, I am looking forward to more in-person performances that will again make us laugh and cry as they pour all of themselves into their roles and the on and backstage work they put in!  Thank you all for allowing us all to see another world through your gifts!

If you were unable to see the SCHS Theatre Arts Awards Ceremony, it was made available to us by Mrs. Rumberger.  Just click here.

And we certainly will not forget the awesome work that was done by our South County Orchestras led by Mrs. Marci Swift as they also closed out the year with a stunning and powerful performance with their Virtual Spring Concert!  To do this from individual locations is nothing short of astonishing! I have an infinity for these performers because I participated as a high school student and know the work that goes into these performances (but I was in no way as good as these performers are!). If you were not able to view the concert, please check it out here:

Well that is it for this week.  I hope that you enjoy the rest of the long weekend.  And as most of us enjoy Monday off, I want to thank all our Armed Forces Service Members, both active and inactive for your willingness to put country first for us all, and share that I am so very thankful for those Service Members who gave their lives in the effort to keep us safe.  Please take care and have a very blessed Memorial Day!  #OneStallion

Credit Recovery

Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover two high-school course credits. Students may take one course per session. Students should contact their school’s summer program administrator for additional information. Students are eligible to enroll in a credit recovery course if they receive a grade of NM at the end of the school year. Credit Recovery is only for students who failed a course. New Course options are detailed on page 2. This is free of cost and transportation is provided to students that need it. Since the sessions are only three weeks long, it is essential that students are available for the entirety of the session. Information for all summer learning opportunities can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning

From the Clinic

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. Please call the School Health Aide with any questions at 703-446-1610.

Quiz Bowl Team

Is your student a fan of trivia games like Jeopardy? There’s an interest meeting for the SCHS Quiz Bowl team on Wednesday, June 2, at 3:00 in Room B144.  A virtual meeting link will be available too.  Please contact Mr. Greiling at edgreiling@fcps.edu for more information.

IMPORTANT FINANCE MESSAGE

TO ALL

SENIOR FAMILIES

If you still owe for Senior dues, class fees in Myschoolbucks, outstanding obligations or any prior year textbooks you will need to pay in-person to the Finance Office on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9:00am – 2:00pm.  All payments MUST be made in cash or money order.  You can no longer pay via credit card or check.  All debts must be cleared or it will impact the students from receiving their cap and gowns at graduation rehearsal.  We will have a list of students with outstanding obligations posted on the Senior page.  This list will only show the students ID number, it will not contain any details or personal information.  Please check to verify that you are cleared.

For planning purposes, we will begin Senior collection of laptops and current year textbooks on June 1 – June 4 (time TBD). If these items are not returned on time they will convert to a debt and will also impact them from receiving their cap and gown during Graduation rehearsal on June 4th.

Pre-sale Online Ticketing for Spring Sports

This spring will be our very first season of using a brand new interface for purchasing tickets for South County sporting events (Softball, Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer and Track), ETix. ETix will allow our fans to purchase tickets online, prior to any game, match, or meet hosted at South County High School. To purchase tickets in advance, use this link to select the event for which you want tickets, then use your credit card information to purchase the number of tickets you want. You will receive a confirmation email for your purchase, and you will pull up that email on your phone to present to the ticket booth, scanning your ticket. This same procedure will also be used for those who wish to make credit card purchases for tickets at the gate on the day of the event.

If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Terri Smith at tasmith1@fcps.edu.

If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to email me any time!

Yearbook Distribution

Yearbooks will be distributed on July 12 in the school cafeteria. Due to COVID, deadlines were pushed back this year in order to cover as much of the school year as possible. Additionally, concurrent schooling makes a traditional distribution not possible. As a result, the distribution will take place over the summer.

On July 12 students can come to the school cafeteria to pick up books they have pre-ordered,  or they can buy a book if they have not pre-ordered one ($85 cash, as supplies last).

Seniors will get to come first at 10 a.m., followed by any underclassmen at 11 a.m.  Depending on COVID restrictions and weather, students may be allowed to socially distance and sign each other’s yearbooks as well.  If you ordered a yearbook and are out of town, there will be additional days to pick up the book after July 12.  If you have not ordered your book yet, you can do so at www.yearbookforever.com.  The only way to guarantee that you get a book is to pre-order, so don’t wait.  Supplies are limited. Books currently cost $75; if you plan to buy a book at distribution they cost $85 cash only.

Questions can be directed to Jennifer Delinski at jldelinski@fcps.edu
