Glasgow Community Gazette - May 31

Powell

Glasgow Community:

It is hard to believe that we are heading into our last two weeks of the school year.  I think we can all agree that it has been an unusual one! This school year has brought us many trials and tribulations, AND yet . . . it has also taught us to be more flexible and patient.

Middle school students will have access to centrally-distributed, optional summer practice activities in both mathematics and language arts.  More information on these resources can be accessed on the Summer Practice Books public webpage. June 7 - emails will be sent to enrolling parents via e-notify based on SY 20-21 enrollment providing digital access to books for families Mid-late June - mailed books arrive to students via USPS.

This year we want to honor our 8th graders and their promotion to high school with a virtual gathering and celebration. We are currently planning for this event to include guest speakers (principal, staff and some student leaders!) and a special video commemorating their time as Panthers. The video will premier LIVE at the 8th Grade Virtual Celebration on Thursday, June 10th at 6pm via BBCU.  We hope you will join us in honoring these students and their successful completion of middle school!

It’s been a pleasure connecting with families during my home visits each week. Please continue to reach out if you would like me to visit you in your community or home. I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

FCPS Grading Policy Updates (Deadline extended to June 1)

Below are updates to the FCPS Grading Policy for middle school students including the due date for parents to request pass-no mark grades for their child’s classes. If you have questions, please reach out to your subject-area administrator.

In 2020-21, changes have been made to grading rules for middle school students.

  • All final marks of "F" will automatically receive a No Mark, "NM", with no action needed by student/family. A mark of "NM" will not be averaged into the student's grade-point average.
  • All final marks of "D" and "D+" will automatically receive a Pass, "P", with no action needed by student/family.
  • With parent/guardian approval, passing marks ("A" through "C-") may be replaced with a mark of "P" by completing this form and returning it to the school counselor/student services department. This decision may not be reversed.
  • A mark of "P" (in lieu of grades "A" through "D") will earn credit and will allow for enrollment in the next course but will not be averaged into the student's grade-point average. Only the letter "P" shall be recorded on the final transcript.

It is important for students and families to review the important considerations and frequently asked questions prior to submitting the request for pass-no mark. Information concerning the pass-no mark option for 2020-21 is available to all parents on the following web site: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary/.  This form must be submitted in hard copy or via email to the school counselor/Student Services Department by June 1 (deadline extended from the original date of May 10). Paper copies will be mailed home to all families with 3rd quarter report cards.

June 8 Primary Election: ALL Virtual Day: Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no in-person classes) for students.

Hunger Games T-shirt Sales: We are still seeking your support with the Hunger Games t-shirt sales. Shirts are still available for purchase through My School Bucks.  We will deliver shirts to the student’s Panther Time class or be available for pick up for the next three Mondays. Sales will end Friday, June 11.

Summer Practice Books: Summer Practice Books will be mailed home to FCPS students to provide suggested activities for students to support continued learning.  Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive digital copies of the Summer Practice Books.  Books will be mailed home to families in early June to arrive before the last day of school, June 11, 2021.  Families will receive email communication in May about upcoming book arrival.  Digital versions of books will be emailed to the enrolling parent SIS account in PDF format the week of June 7, 2021.

Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts Practice Book and one Math Practice Book by course enrollment.  These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer.

After School Updates

Hello Panther Families! As Summer approaches, it’s hard to believe we’ve  completed another year of After School. Although we’ve had our challenges, it’s been fun interacting with our students and getting to know them. I am very appreciative of the relationships that have been made, as I am sure our teachers and administration feels the same way. Although the school year will be ending, we’ll still have learning opportunities and fun activities over the summer.  If you’re interested in Summer fun, please check out VIP CAMP (link). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at gwilliams2@fcps.edu.
