Principals' Message

Good morning Freedom Hill families,

We are swinging into the end of the school year at Freedom Hill! However, we are taking a short respite from our learning tomorrow to celebrate Memorial Day. Please remember that we also have modified schedules on June 8 (Election Day - all instruction is virtual) and June 11 (2-hr early release).

Be on the look out for next week's newsletter, which will have some important summer updates including:

  • Back to School Information
  • School Supply Lists
  • Recognition of departing staff (We have three staff retirements this year, and one teacher relocating out of NOVA)
  • Introductions of our four new staff members joining us for next year

Did you know that Freedom Hill often qualifies for a 4th kindergarten classroom just before the school year begins due to last minute enrollments? We would love to hire this teacher now! If you know a family with an unregistered rising kindergartener, please encourage them to register ASAP!

Wishing you a great week ahead,

Dr. Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Asst. Principal

The books provide suggested activities to support continued learning over the summer break. Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive a digital link.

Books will be mailed home to families in early June to arrive before the last day of school, June 11th. If books do not arrive ahead of the last day of school, families are encouraged to reach out and request print copies.

Students will receive the following books:

  • Pre-kindergarten students will receive one interdisciplinary summer practice book.
  • Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts practice book and one Math practice book by course enrollment. These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer.
  • English learners and students receiving Special Education services may receive additional or customized books.

Please see the Summer Practice Books public webpage for more information and details about customized books for English learners and Special Education students.

Updates from the PTA

PICTURE BOOKS NEEDED!

As our 2020-2021 school year comes to a close, please consider donating gently loved books to the Freedom Hill Bookmobile. In past years, FHES staff have been able to give away hundreds of books to students through the Bookmobile. FHES is especially looking for picture books, including fiction and nonfiction. We will also collect board books, chapter books, and young adult books. You can leave your donated books in the front office. Please contact Freedom Hill’s reading specialist, Mrs. Rossman at Melissa.Rossman@fcps.edu with any questions.

PTA CHAIR POSITIONS OPEN

We'd love to get our PTA back up to full swing but need YOUR help with volunteers. We are looking for people to help with the events: Back to School type event, Teacher Appreciation Chairs, International Celebration, Community Bingo Night, Science Fair, Enrichment Activities, Fundraiser type of events (like Readathon or 5K type of events), Field Day and more. COVID-19 has made us rethink so many aspects of life so with that in mind, just because something has been done a certain way before - doesn't mean it has to be done the same way again. Contact us to talk through the planning process and think through ideas at our info email.

PTA MEETING THURSDAY, JUNE 3 AT 8PM

Save the date for our PTA Membership meeting on Thursday June 3rd at 8pm. We will conducting our election, honoring all the PTA chairs and volunteers from this year and announcing our Harriet Best award winners. Join us by joining this link or calling 312-626-6799 and dialing 952 0211 3000.
