Substance Abuse Prevention Newsletter

The end of the school year and summer are both right around the corner. This means end-of-year celebrations, graduation parties, summer BBQs, and a lot of time either spent at home or with friends. This could also mean opportunities for your child to use and misuse substances.

Each school pyramid has a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS) assigned to provide substance abuse prevention, education, and intervention services. Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists are part of the FCPS Office of Student Safety and Wellness.

To read more about resources available, please see the Spring issue of the Substance Abuse Newsletter by clicking HERE

It Could Happen To Any of Us - The Truth About Opioids and Xanax

In October of 2019, the Hayfield community suffered a tragedy when Brandon Bell, a former student from the class of 2016 died of an overdose of Opioids and Xanax.  Brandon was an amazing young man who was a star football player for the Hawks and was planning to play in college.  Brandon’s mother, Mrs. Tina Bell has shared her story with the community to help bring awareness to this national epidemic.

The FCPS YouTube video linked below is an interview with Mrs. Bell that was professionally recorded and edited by FCPS Department of Information Technology.

Library News

The LAST DAY FOR CURBSIDE PICK-UP is Monday, May 24th.  Any virtual student who wants to pick up a book on this date must place the item on hold using the library catalog asap.  Items borrowed by students may be returned ANY weekday, from around 7:45 until 1:15 (to avoid bus congestion).  There is a big, metal book return that sits right inside the school’s main entrance.

COMING SOON:  Look in next week’s newsletter for information about Irving’s Summer READ! Program.  Rising 7th graders and 8th graders will have the opportunity to read a variety of books and will even get to have their name entered in a drawing for Barnes and Noble gift cards.  Stay tuned!

All students, virtual or in-person students need to begin returning any library materials that are still at home.  Many current 7th grade students still have items that they borrowed from their elementary schools during the 2019-2020 school year.  Please help us get all of these materials back to their proper schools so that other students can enjoy them.

Preparing for SOLs

Please make sure your child’s school loaned laptop is working properly: the screen is intact (not cracked), and all keys are working. Please also have your child restart their laptop to update it completely. Shutting it down and turning it back on is not the same as restarting it. Restarts are the only way to ensure necessary updates. If your child’s school loaned laptop needs to be repaired, please contact our Technology Specialist, Steve Snow at smsnow@fcps.edu as soon as possible. Students may not use their personal devices to take a SOL exam. We will have laptops for students to use each day of testing if they did not check out a school laptop.

  • Additional Reminders:
    • Please bring your laptop charger to school on your SOL day.
    • Please bring a paper book to read when you finish your SOL and while you are waiting for the testing session to end.

In-Person Technology Reminders

Bring your school-issued laptop to each day that you are in school. We cannot support or troubleshoot personal devices.

  1. Please shutdown and plug-in the laptop each night so that it is fully charged for the school day.
  2. Bring the laptop, laptop charger and headphones or earbuds to school each in-person day.
  3. Restart your laptop each day when you are in school in order to update your laptop completely. A restart is not the same as turning it off/on or logging off/on. Restarts are the only way to ensure necessary updates.

After School Program

Save the Date for Irving Academy!

Irving Academy is a transition program designed to give students a “jump start” into middle school.  The program equips students with some of the skills they need to be successful in middle school, as well as give them an opportunity to meet peers and ask questions about Irving.  Enrollment is open to all WIMS rising 7th graders.  Students will attend a one day in person program on either Monday August 9th, Tuesday August 10th, or Wednesday August 11th.

New this year! We will be offering a transition program for rising 8th grade students who are fully virtual this year.  This program will be on Thursday, August 12th.

Registration for the program will begin on Monday, May 24th. Registration information will be sent home via email to families of eligible participants.

Please contact Emily Geary (emgeary@fcps.edu) with questions.
