Laptop Collection Information for Families

All FCPS laptops checked out from Hunt Valley ES must be returned to HVES for summer maintenance and inventory.  Both the laptop and power cord/charger need to be returned.  If your laptop came with a sleeve/case, you may keep that and use it next year.

Students participating in a summer school program will not be required to return the FCPS laptop until after the program ends, but no later than Friday, August 6. 2021.  A reminder will be sent to families in late July.

In person students in grades K, 1 and 2 will return their laptops during school on Wednesday, June 9, 2021.  Please ensure your student brings the laptop and power cord that day.

In person students in grades 3, 4, 5,and 6 will return their laptops during school on Thursday, June 10, 2021.  Please ensure your student brings the laptop and power cord that day.

Virtual Students have two return options:

Monday, June 7, 2021 - 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
(only if you have another device at home for your student to use for this final week of school)
Or
Friday, June 11, 2021 - 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
(last day or school after early dismissal)

Parents of virtual students are asked to drive through the Kiss and Ride loop (parking lot) and then turn into the bus loop at the front of the school by door 1. You will stay in your car, lower the window and hand the laptop and power cord to a staff member.

Thank you for your cooperation in getting the laptops back in school for their summer care!

Face Masks Are Still Required at All Times at All FCPS Sites, Indoors and Outdoors

On Thursday, April 29, Governor Ralph Northam amended Executive Order Seventy-Two to adopt new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on mask use in outdoor settings. The CDC guidelines state that fully vaccinated individuals do not have to wear masks outdoors when alone or in small gatherings. Mask use is still required indoors and outdoors at large crowded events like concerts, sporting events, and graduation ceremonies.

What does that mean for FCPS?

  • The ease in the mask rule only applies to social gatherings.
  • Sports (to include spectators of FCPS events) and entertainment (proms and other events) are not included.
  • Only athletes engaged in active play may remove their masks.
  • Until further notice, FCPS’ Regulation 2109 still requires masks in facilities and on school property as FCPS has no way of knowing who is and who isn’t vaccinated.

Substance Abuse Prevention Newsletter

The end of the school year and summer are both right around the corner. This means end-of-year celebrations, graduation parties, summer BBQs, and a lot of time either spent at home or with friends. This could also mean opportunities for your student to use and misuse substances.

Each school pyramid has a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS) assigned to provide substance abuse prevention, education, and intervention services. Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists are part of the FCPS Office of Student Safety and Wellness.

To read more about resources available, please see the Spring issue of the Substance Abuse Newsletter by clicking HERE

Tech Support for Parents and Students

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Parents or guardians can call this number for basic tech support with parent accounts, help with FCPS student devices and technical assistance with other FCPS applications. If help desk staff members are unable to solve the issue, they will enter a support ticket on behalf of the parent/guardian to escalate the issue to the appropriate FCPS team. Parents who need help in a language other than English can inform the help desk staff when they call of their preferred language, and an interpreter will join in on the call.

FCPS has also set up Parent and Student Technology Support portal at https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/ to allow older students and parents/guardians to request technology help directly. When a support request ticket is entered through the portal, it is auto-routed to the TSSpec at the appropriate site to expedite service.

Calling all Hockey Families

We are getting a coed team together for Springfield to join the Northern Virginia School Hockey League. The target age group for this team is 6th -8th graders as of Fall 2021.

There are currently no affiliated teams with FCPS at Middle and High Schools, and the intention is this fills that void.

The commitment is only for 1 day per week (mostly Friday evenings), for 10 games in the Fall of 2021. Price will be determined on how many players we have.

Please reach out to springfieldnvshl@gmail.com if you’re interested or with any questions or visit  http://nvshl.org/ for more information about the league.

summer

This summer, help your child become a confident, enthusiastic reader in the Summer Reading Skills Programs, offered through a partnership with the University of Richmond School of Professional & Continuing Studies and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development.

Strengthen Skills, Build Confidence, Enjoy Reading

These programs teach key reading skills for every grade, from phonics and sight words for younger children, to comprehension, textbook strategies and writing skills for older kids, and everything in between.

Guided by a knowledgeable and supportive teacher, students in these programs experience reading success again and again, developing their skills and building confidence in outstanding books at the right level of challenge for each age.

Your child will build the skills, confidence, and motivation he or she needs to become an avid, enthusiastic reader, who enjoys reading for school and for pleasure.

How the Programs Work

Your child will attend weekly live online classes that build skills and provide great experiences with terrific books – books that are filled with interesting characters, exciting storylines, and engaging themes. Between classes, your child will practice reading and complete fun interactive lessons that develop core skills and build confidence.

An Institute of Reading Development teacher will provide all the support and instruction your child needs to grow as a reader and student.  Your child will get a jumpstart on the next school year and be ready to make it a big success!
