Mustang Message - May 23, 2021

Dear Bren Mar Park Families,

I want to take a moment and say THANK YOU for your support this school year.  You have partnered with us in your child's learning as well as bringing your child to the school building so that they can participate in a variety of end of year assessments.  Your partnership, help and support is very much appreciated by the Bren Mar Park staff.

This year has been difficult for many, with worries, changes and challenges.  As we prepare to begin our summer season, I will be inviting parents to join me in Principal Chats to share perspectives, ask questions, and suggest ideas about how we can continue to work together as return strong in the Fall with 5 days per week of in-person instruction.  These will be virtual only to allow for increased access and participation, and I do hope that you will find a time to join at least one.  Upcoming dates for these are:

    - Monday, June 28, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. - Sharing Hopes for Our Students

    - Monday, July 26, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.- Sharing Our Stories

   - Monday, August 8, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. - Partnership: Reflection on the Year

Take care,

Mrs. Williams

Proud BMP Principal

All Library Books Due on May 28

The end of the year is coming soon!  Please return ALL library books by Friday, May 28, 2021.

Virtual students can return library books to the office anytime during the school day.  In-person students can return library books to the classroom teacher.

To see what library books your student still has out, please follow these steps:

  • Open up the library catalog:   https://search.follettsoftware.com/metasearch/ui/103149
  • Click ‘Log In’ at the top right.
  • Click on the blue box on the left that says ‘Fairfax County Public Schools’.
  • Type in your child’s ID and Password that he or she uses to get into the computer each morning.
  • Click on your child’s name at the top right (where it used to say ‘Log In’).
  • Click on ‘Checkouts’ – it’s the first choice in the list – and you can see the covers of the books your child still has checked out.

You will need to follow all of these steps for each child you have to see each of your children’s individual accounts.  I will send home a paper listing any remaining checked out books on Thursday, June 3rd.

Please help us find as many of these books as possible!!  The books (and I) appreciate your help!  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Watson, BMP Librarian.

Student Check Out Process

For parents/guardians who are checking out students from the school building, please remember that you are required to bring a government-issued photo identification, such as a passport or drivers license, so that we can ensure the safety of your child.

Parent Information Session: ST Math

Every student has the potential to deeply understand and truly love math. This belief helps ST Math become a powerful tool many students are using in FCPS. Students develop their math knowledge through challenging puzzles, non-routine problem solving, and informative feedback.

Join us for this important webinar to learn how families can use ST Math with their children to help them develop a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics.

Webinar Highlights:

  • Discover how learning occurs in ST Math
  • Support students working in the program from home
  • Uncover how to view student progress
  • Locate additional resources for ST Math use at home

Specialist Spotlight

Spotlight on Advanced Academics

This month we have been focusing on the critical and creative thinking skill: Point of View and Decisions and Outcomes.

Point of View helps broaden students’ thinking and demonstrates that an idea should be examined from many points of view before an opinion is formed.   Exploring alternative points of view is critical to understanding history and problem solving in the present and future.  Students were analyzing how different people might look at the same idea or situation.

At home you can use point of view to analyze how different people might view topics:

Questions to think about: 1.) How would _____ view this?

2.) If ______ were a ______, how would they feel?

3.) How would this look to a _____?

4.) What would someone with the opposite opinion think?

At Home Ideas: Research one of the following frog species.  Create a short story or comic from the point of view of:

A Pickerel Frog

A Clawed Frog

A Chorus Frog

A Poison Dart Frog

Decision and Outcomes is a structure for understanding cause and effect relationships.  It also helps students to recognize the importance of examining the outcomes of multiple decision options before embarking on a course of action.

At home you can use decisions and outcomes to help students think about the possible outcomes of multiple decisions before acting:

Questions to think about:

1.) If _____ occurred, what would happen next?

2.) What would happen if there were no ______?

3.) What if everyone did something?

4.) What would happen if it were true that_____?

At Home Ideas: Think about what decisions you can make to help improve pollution in your community?  What possible outcomes will result from your decision?
