Playground Visits for our Virtual Students

play

Some of our virtual classes had an opportunity to "meet" and play on our new playground.  We can see that they enjoyed both the playground and seeing their classmates.  Thank you to PTA President Christie Buschmann for organizing these events.

COVID-19 Vaccine Now Available for People Ages 12 and Up

The COVID-19 vaccine is now available for people ages 12 and up. This means just about every middle and high school student in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) may now be vaccinated.

FCPS is encouraging student vaccinations because this is one more way to ensure the safest school environment for everyone and for students to avoid quarantine if they are exposed to someone with COVID-19.

FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department have issued a joint statement on the vaccine recommendation.  Please read the complete text of this statement here.

Additional information on the “teen vaccine” may be found on the FCPS website.

Counseling Corner

During this time of year and throughout virtual learning, it can be challenging for adults and children to regulate emotions. A great tool is identifying feelings and choosing a coping strategy. Check out the coping strategies tool box below as well as the Churchill Road Virtual Calm Down Room here:

https://sites.google.com/fcpsschools.net/churchill-road-calmdown/home?authuser=0

  1. Identify your emotion and how your body is feeling.
  2. Remind yourself it is OKAY to feel your emotions.
  3. Choose a coping tool to calm your mind and body.

Update on Parking and Driving Concerns

We have received some complaints from our neighbors about unsafe parking and driving practices around our school. Some of the most common complaints occurring in the community surrounding our school are listed below. All these offenses are subject to ticketing as well.

  • U-turns at any point on Churchill Road.
  • Driving over a solid yellow line in the roadway
  • Parking within 10 feet of driveways – Parking is not allowed within 10’ of any driveway
  • Parking at intersections – Parking is not allowed in or within 20’ of an intersection
  • Parking within 20’ of a designated crosswalk

Most importantly, supporting good driving and parking practices helps to ensure the safety of our students.  We are all encouraged to be mindful of traffic laws and supporting our neighbors living close to our school as well.

Walk/Bike to School Day a Success

The weather cooperated and we had many students walk or ride their bikes to school.  Thank you to PE teachers Molly Gift and Bryn Varhol for organizing this fun and healthy event.

Cooper Prep Information for Rising 7th Grade Students!

Cooper Prep sessions will take place on August 11th and 12th. Morning sessions will take place from 8:00-10:30 am and afternoon sessions will take place from 12:00-2:30 pm. Each session is identical, students should attend one day and one session only.

Who: All rising 7th grade students enrolling at Cooper Middle School for the 2021-2022 school year.

What: Cooper Prep is a program intended to ease the transition from elementary to middle school for rising 7th graders. Students will become familiar with Cooper and learn about expectations for students by familiarizing themselves with the building, understanding our schedule, meeting our staff and students, and learning more about “life at Cooper”. Students will also learn about organization, time management, and cooperative learning strategies that will help them have a successful school year.

Where: In addition to the face-to-face Cooper Prep orientation, all students will have access to virtual learning opportunities during the summer to help them prepare for the transition to middle school. The virtual Cooper Prep program will be posted on Cooper’s website. Synchronous, face-to-face sessions will occur at Cooper Middle School on August 11th & 12th. Each day will have two sessions, one offered in morning, and another in the afternoon. The morning and afternoon sessions will be identical. Students should attend one session only.

When: Registration links to sign your child up for a Cooper Prep session will be posted on the Cooper Website on May 24th, space is limited. Transportation will not be provided- parents are responsible for pickup/drop off.  Carpooling is encouraged.

How: Once you have successfully registered your child, you will receive an email confirming their registration for the program. Please reach out to Emily Knupp (eaknupp1@fcps.edu) or Sarah Hartman (sahartman2@fcps.edu)  with any questions you may have.

We look forward to welcoming your child to Cooper Prep this summer!

Get a Head Start on Your Cooper Spirit!

Help your student get ready for Cooper next year by purchasing some of our most popular spirit wear items now. Hoodies, t-shirts, sweatpants and more are available for purchase via the Cooper PTO on-line store, and would make a great 6th grade graduation gift!

You will be asked to log-in or create a Parent Account at check-out which you will be able to use in this fall to join the Cooper PTO, purchase additional spirit wear items, and register for PTO-sponsored activities. Orders must be submitted by Wednesday, May 26, and will be available for pick-up at Cooper approximately June 3rd.  An email with additional pick up instructions will be sent to those who place an order.

Questions? Please email membership@cooperpto.org or fundraising@cooperpto.org.  We look forward to welcoming your student to Cooper!
