Churchill Chatter - Issue 37, May 9, 2021

Dear Churchill Families,

We hope everyone had a good week. Thank you to our entire community for showering our teachers and staff with treats and appreciation this week.  Teachers had a wonderful week and felt the love!

We would also like to wish every one of our amazing mothers a very Happy Mother's Day this Sunday.  We appreciate all that you do as you partner with us to support our students…especially this year!

This week FCPS shared plans for the fall. We are excited to have all staff and students return in the fall to five days of in-person instruction!

We do realize that some students may have a documented health or medical need for virtual instruction. Enrollment in FCPS’ Virtual Program for the 2021-22 school year will be VERY limited. Eligibility will be based on a health/medical certification of need completed by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or a licensed clinical psychologist. Families will need to apply. Enrollment will be based on the health needs of the student only and not on the health of their family members. All currently enrolled virtual families should have received communication about next year and the steps to take this month.

We are so looking forward to next school year!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Cherith Pierson and Jen Niccolls

Thank You!

Thank you to all for making this such a special staff appreciation week. The week started off with a boxed lunch for staff, and gift bags with surprises to open each of the remaining days of the week. A very special thank you to Shelli Bushman, PTA President-Elect, for coordinating these very much appreciated treats. The notes, flowers and goodies that students have been sending in mean more than you will ever know, especially given all the events of the past year.

With our most sincere appreciation,

The Entire CRS Staff

RESCHEDULED: Walk or Bike to School Day is Now May 11th

Let's encourage one another to get active and show our Churchill Road community spirit. Wear your Bobcat blue gear and Walk & Bike to School.

Remember to wear your mask and maintain your 3-foot bubble!

Some of your favorite Churchill Road faculty and staff will be around the school to greet our walkers/bike riders!

How Was Your Day?

It is a question we often ask our children; “How was your day?” We want to check in on what they did, show interest in their progress and support them. Often the answer is ‘fine’.

So how do you get a more meaningful and complete picture of how your loved one’s day went?

Here are 20 open-ended questions you can ask to elicit a more meaningful response.

  1. Tell me about today’s “thorn” (not-great thing that happened) at school.
  2. Now tell me about the “rose” (the best thing that happened).
  3. Did anyone say something funny or tell a good joke?
  4. Was it a play with your friends at recess kind of day or a chill by yourself on the swing kind of day?
  5. You had art/music/computer today, right? What kind of project are you working on?
  6. Tell me something that you learned today that I don’t know. If you can stump me, I’ll do a goofy dance, read to you for an extra 10 minutes, watch an entire Minecraft YouTube video with you (insert whatever works here).
  7. Tell me something kind that you did for someone today.
  8. Tell me something kind that someone else did for you today.
  9. How many stars would you give the cafeteria food today?
  10. Did your friends get along really well today?
  11. Tell me two things you learned today and one thing you didn’t I’ll try to guess which one is the imposter.
  12. If you could have one subject all day what would it be?
  13. If you and your teacher were body swapped what’s the first thing you would do?
  14. If you could switch classroom jobs with someone this week who would it be?
  15. If you could pick what you learned in social studies/math/ science/reading what would you pick?
  16. If you could interview your principal what would you ask her?
  17. If we had a time machine that went back one day, would you change anything about today?
  18. If the librarian said you could keep one book forever which one would it be?

Summer Learning Programs at Churchill Road

In the next week or so, we will be reaching out to parents of students we have identified for our summer learning programs. This identification is being done through our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) team. We will contact you if your child will be invited to attend summer school here at Churchill Road so that we can start solidifying our numbers. More information will be coming soon.
