Glasgow Community Gazette - May 9

Powell

Glasgow Community:

Greetings! The first week in May is down and on to the 2nd week! This weekend was spent hanging out with Samuel for his violin lesson and playing inside with Greyson. Mother's Day is this weekend and I want to send a special message to the real super heroes of the world, our lovely mothers and motherly figures in our lives! Your love and support for kids is unmatched!

This past week was Staff Appreciation Week! We are so grateful for our wonderful staff who give their all each day to make a difference for our students. We feel fortunate to serve with such an amazing group of people, as you can see from the pictures below.

We thank our PTA who has made each day special for staff through meals, snacks, etc. That parent support is very much appreciated! We are blessed to have a supportive partnership with the PTA and all parent volunteers. These acts of service have brought many smiles to our teachers and staff days this week.

We are so excited that FCPS will be offering five days of in-person instruction to all students this fall! These past few months of having smaller groups of students in our buildings showed that our students can adapt to new learning environments, and that our safety strategies do work to limit the spread of COVID-19 in school buildings. Our administrative team, teachers, and building support staff are committed to providing a safe place for your students to learn

If you are still interested in me visiting your family this spring or summer, please email me! Thank you for all you do for our school that people see and that people don't see. Have a blessed week!

I am here to support in any way I can.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

FCPS Grading Policy Updates (Deadline extended to June 1)

Below are updates to the FCPS Grading Policy for middle school students including the due date for parents to request pass-no mark grades for their child’s classes. If you have questions, please reach out to your subject-area administrator.

In 2020-21, changes have been made to grading rules for middle school students.

  • All final marks of "F" will automatically receive a No Mark, "NM", with no action needed by student/family. A mark of "NM" will not be averaged into the student's grade-point average.
  • All final marks of "D" and "D+" will automatically receive a Pass, "P", with no action needed by student/family.
  • With parent/guardian approval, passing marks ("A" through "C-") may be replaced with a mark of "P" by completing this form and returning it to the school counselor/student services department. This decision may not be reversed.
  • A mark of "P" (in lieu of grades "A" through "D") will earn credit and will allow for enrollment in the next course but will not be averaged into the student's grade-point average. Only the letter "P" shall be recorded on the final transcript.

It is important for students and families to review the important considerations and frequently asked questions prior to submitting the request for pass-no mark. Information concerning the pass-no mark option for 2020-21 is available to all parents on the following web site: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary/.  This form must be submitted in hard copy or via email to the school counselor/Student Services Department by June 1 (deadline extended from the original date of May 10). Paper copies will be mailed home to all families with 3rd quarter report cards.

Picture Packet Update: In person students:  Picture packets arrived at Glasgow and were distributed to students in school this past week during Panther Time.  If your student had their picture taken and did not receive their packet, please email their Panther Time teacher. Virtual students: Students who are virtual will be able to come to Glasgow to pick up their pictures starting on Tuesday, May 11.  The front office staff will be able to assist you daily between 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM. When you arrive, please tell the front office who your student’s Panther Time teacher is since that is how we are sorting them.

June 8 Primary Election: ALL Virtual Day: Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no in-person classes) for students.

Redistribution will take place May 22, 2021, from 10-1 at Glasgow. Glasgow staff will provide food bags on a first-come, first-serve basis. While the Hunger Games are over, t-shirts are still available through My School Bucks. Shirts would be delivered to the student or picked up on Mondays until June 7, 2021.
