STEM Night Information
FREE Set of Tangrams for every student!
STEM night is coming and one of the activities that students may participate in is the solving of tangram puzzles. All students will receive their own set of tangrams based on the generosity of our PTA. For virtual students who are not coming into the school building for SOL testing, parents may pick up a set of tangrams in the office at any day from Friday, May 14th – Wednesday, May 19th between 12:00-3:00 PM. All other students will receive their set of tangrams when they come into the building for testing, or if they have returned to the building for instruction. Please contact Lisa Schroeder at lmschroeder@fcps.edu with any questions.

All Students are Virtual on Tuesday, June 8th
Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no In-Person classes) for students.
All Library Books Due – Friday, May 28th
Please return any school library books by Friday, May 28th. Students can locate their checkout list by signing-in to the library catalog: https://search.follettsoftware.com/metasearch/ui/103873 In the top right corner, click on “Log-In.” On the following screen, use the blue banner to log in with Fairfax County Public Schools. Then, click on the square with three horizontal lines located in the top left corner and checkouts. For in person students, they may place returning books outside of their classroom door. Virtual students may place books in the box located at the main entrance of the school. If you aren’t able to do either option, please email Mrs. McIntyre. Thanks for your help keeping our library fabulous! For any questions or help returning books, dhmcintyre@fcps.edu
Registration for Fairfax County's School Age Child Care (SACC) Coming Soon
Fairfax County’s School Age Child Care (SACC) program will be open to provide before- and after-school services for the 2021-22 school year. The SACC program is currently assessing Center capacities based on health and safety protocols. More information for the 2021-22 school year program will be available by June 15 on the SACC website. Families who were previously enrolled will be contacted to determine their need for services.
Has or Will Your Address Be Changing?
If you have moved or will be moving before the end of the school year, please inform Lourdes Presnell at lcpresnell@fcps.edu . This will ensure that your family will continue to get important information for the rest of this school year. Please note that even if you have, or will, move out of the Gunston boundary before the end of the school year, your child(ren) can continue at Gunston through the last day of school.
Returning Five Days in Fall: American Academy of Pediatrics Endorses FCPS’ Five Days of In-Person Learning
This week, the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) put out a statement supporting FCPS’ model of five days of in-person instruction for all students this fall.
This endorsement by a highly respected group of pediatricians validates our belief that in-person learning is best for children. The AAP also believes that virtual instruction should be utilized only when necessary as a result of a documented health or medical need and in consultation with a child’s physician or medical team.
FCPS virtual learning in the fall will be limited to students with documented COVID-19 related health/medical needs. For more information about the virtual program for School Year 2021-22, visit the virtual program webpage or view the news release.
The PTA needs Y O U !
2021-2022 School Year
The PTA is looking for new board members to serve for the 2021-2022 school year. Here is your chance to become more involved in your child's education. The PTA works hard to support our teachers and staff. We foster communication between parents and the school as well as helping to make our viewpoints known to the Fairfax County School Board, our Virginia and our national government.
The PTA is involved in:
STEM Night, Heritage Night, Yearbooks, Spiritwear, Teacher/Staff Appreciation, Read-a-thon, Field Day, Sixth Grade Promotion Activities, supporting military families, Autism Awareness, The Holiday Shop, Turkey Trot, The Fall Carnival and more.
This year the PTA facilitated virtual learning by providing our teachers with 23 document cameras, plus microphones. We also contributed a great number of back to school supplies which students picked up with their computers last summer. We know the last year was tough, but if you want Gunston to be the best school it can be for our children, please get involved. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact gunstonpta@gmail. com.
