1.  From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the Chantilly Community:

Happy Friday. Throughout the year, our leadership students have worked to shine a bright light on the dangers of not addressing mental illness and educating students about how to get help if they need it. As part of Mental Health Awareness Week starting this past Monday, Chantilly Leadership students designed a series of spirit activities to reduce student stress and reduce the stigma of mental illness. They started by having Kindness Monday, where students provided one act of kindness like sharing a kind message with a friend, teacher, or family member. Relaxing Tuesday was an opportunity for students to wear pajamas and take a little break with comfort. Wednesday was Pet Day, and students got to show off their furry friends and bring joy to others with adorable pictures. On Thursday, students were asked to wear their Chantilly gear in order to represent the community and demonstrate solidarity. Finally, Friday was Green Day because green is the color for Mental Health Awareness Month. We ended the week with SGA Executive Officer Katherine Richer sharing a slideshow discussing what mental health is, how you can improve your mental health, and how to seek assistance. We have posted this slide show and an anonymous form that allows students to write how they are feeling.

I thank our SGA students and teachers for their efforts. As you probably know, the pandemic has exacerbated depression and anxiety for many around the world. We want to continue partnering with families, medical professionals, religious leaders, and others as needed to do everything we can to protect the psychological safety of the students we serve and to address those in need. If you know of any student in need of help, please don’t wait to reach out. Please see the following link for additional information and resources: https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/mental-health-resources

Best wishes,

Scott

8.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week (virtually) to congratulate them.

  • Krishna Mohan Bhamidipati has been a great asset to CHS DECA for the 20-21 school year. He has contributed a lot of team spirit as a CHS DECA Officer and has continued as a successful DECA Competitor. We appreciate you Krishna!  Ms. Karyn Jones
  • Julian Cerniello currently has a 99.4% in programming, only missing 4 points all year. He is able to solve complex problems quickly and often on his first attempt.  Mr. Matt Keel
  • George Hakim's last few assignments have demonstrated how far he has come this year and how much he has learned in Engineering Drawing. He has met with me in office hours, asked questions during class, and had an open mind with regards to instruction. He has begun to apply all that he has learned and we are able to see his hard work pay off. I'm so proud of your efforts this year, George!  Ms. Susan Chudovan
  • Caitlyn Kantaparn won 1st Place at FBLA's State Leadership Conference for her competition in E-Business. She will be moving on to compete at the National Leadership Conference this summer. Congratulations, Caitlyn!  Ms. Catherine Casares
  • Charles Miller has been a huge help in the classroom. He helped teach other students a skill we learned. He also overheard a hungry student, who forgot to eat breakfast, ask me for food. Without anyone asking him, Charlie took out his own food and gave it to his hungry classmate. Charlie's act of kindness is exactly what we want Chargers (and criminal justice students) to do.  Mr. Patrick Loftus
  • Melina Risi has been an outstanding student in Introduction to Marketing this year. She is engaged in her learning and participates daily in class discussions. Melina shows a deep understanding of marketing content and takes advantage of opportunities given to her. She recently was hired for her first job and I could not be more proud of her! Looking forward to seeing Melina's continued growth through high school as she has already shown great love and pride in being a Chantilly HS student.  Ms. Jennifer Piotrowski
  • Blake Tellef is being recognized for his excellent communication and self-advocacy skills in Veterinary Science. He understands the importance of communication in a virtual learning environment. He is respectful, well-spoken and cares about his success.  Ms. McGlensey Antonucci & Ms. Beth Tally
  • Lila York is always prepared and enthusiastic in class. She is a genuinely kind person and I am sure she is going to make a wonderful Registered Nurse! Ms. Cindy Holland
