Eating Disorder Parent Information

The Code of Virginia, 22.1-273.2 requires Virginia Public Schools to provide, on an annual basis, parent educational information regarding eating disorders for pupils in grades five through twelve. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2020):

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Eating disorders are not fads or phases, and can have serious consequences for health, productivity, and relationships.

Eating disorders can develop or re-emerge at any age. Eating disorder specialists are reporting an increase in the diagnosis of children, some as young as five or six. Many eating disorder sufferers report that their thoughts and behaviors started much earlier than anyone realized, sometimes even in early childhood. Although most people report the onset of their eating disorder in their teens and young adulthood, there is some evidence that people are being diagnosed at younger ages.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed eating disorder documents with detailed information to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. The letter and fact sheet have been translated and posted on the following webpage: http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/translations/dss-healthmedical.htm.

Library News

The next Curbside Pick-up date will be May 3rd, from noon until 3 pm.

THANKS to many of you who have returned long-overdue books this week!!

8th graders who have long-overdue items from their 7th grade year were messaged about what items are still on loan to them.  Please either return books or email to report them as lost.  No fines or replacement fees are associated with these loans.

Virtual students, plan to return ANY overdue library books if you come to school for SOL testing.

In-person students should be returning books to the library on the days they are in the school building.

If you need some more reading material at any time, remember that students can always log into Mackinvia.com to borrow ebooks or audiobooks.

Tech Tips

Preparing for SOLs

Please make sure your child’s school loaned laptop is working properly: the screen is intact (not cracked), and all keys are working. Please also have your child restart their laptop to update it completely. Shutting it down and turning it back on is not the same as restarting it. Restarts are the only way to ensure necessary updates. If your child’s school loaned laptop needs to be repaired, please contact our Technology Specialist, Steve Snow at smsnow@fcps.edu as soon as possible. Students may not use their personal devices to take a SOL exam. We will have laptops for students to use each day of testing if they did not check out a school laptop.

In-Person Technology Reminders

Bring your school-issued laptop to each day that you are in school. We cannot support or troubleshoot personal devices.

  1. Please shutdown and plug-in the laptop each night so that it is fully charged for the school day.
  2. Bring the laptop, laptop charger and headphones or earbuds to school each in-person day.
  3. Restart your laptop each day when you are in school in order to update your laptop completely. A restart is not the same as turning it off/on or logging off/on. Restarts are the only way to ensure necessary updates.

It is imperative that we have consent for all students.
