Cardinal's Message

Cardinal's Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

Recently, there have been several stories in the media about the Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative. As this is an ongoing process, let us share with you what we know so far.

Some background: Every 7 years, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) revises the standards in each content area and reassesses graduation requirements. VDOE follows an established procedure for standards revision that includes public comment windows and public hearings.

As a part of this regular revision cycle, elementary standards of learning are being reviewed for possible changes to some standards in an effort to ensure alignment.  Any changes to standards would take place in four to five years.

Overall, the emphasis is to increase access to higher levels of mathematics for students, in particular those whose populations tend to be underrepresented in advanced courses, and any students who need increased depth and breadth in learning.  Rigor will remain essential K-12, as deeper conceptual thinking is strengthened.

The dates for a public comment period on the mathematics standards revisions have not yet been announced, watch for this information to be advertised through VDOE and FCPS.

We hope this helps with questions about what's to come mathematically for our students.  We will continue to keep you updated as we are able.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

Shirts for this year were given to all staff members to wear with pride. We can hardly wait to get shirts into the hands of all students as well!

Student Cardinal T-Shirts are On The Way!

Thanks to the generosity of the CPES PTA, we have Cardinal-red t-shirts for every Cunningham Park student! Shirts arrived and we began distributing this week. We still have more to distribute, and can hardly wait to get them into the hands of ALL our learners!

Parents of students who are 100% virtual should stop by the school during library pick-up times next week (Thursday, May 6th at 5:00-6:00pm or Friday, May 7th at 12:00-1:00pm).  Parents who are unable to stop by at those times are welcome to designate a different parent to pick up shirts for your children.

Once all students have their shirts, be on the lookout for upcoming spirit days that remind us we are #OneSchool!

P2 Focus This Week: Purpose

People strong in this trait have the sense that they are put on this earth for a reason and that they are somehow connected with humanity or the universe. These people strive to find their true calling in life. It also gives them the ability to cope, even in difficult situations. This trait is one that can be strengthened by realizing that our lives have meaning and what we do matters.

Our digital citizenship connection to purpose is: We define who we are. The trait of purpose can be strengthened. One way to do this is to make sure that WE define who we are when we are online. Are we kind and helpful? Do we treat others the way we want to be treated? Part of our purpose is to help others feel included in our daily lives. Are we doing this in our online interactions with others?

Try this at home:  Make three lists with your child:

  1. What are they good at?
  2. What do they love to do?
  3. What is important to them

Notice: Is there anything that shows up on all three lists? Discuss with your child how making these lists can help them find their purpose. Think about ways you as a family can help your child find his or her purpose.

Quote of the week: “Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.” -GUATAMA BUDDHA
