Teacher Appreciation

Dear Woodburn Families,

We are excited to celebrate our teachers and staff next week.  We thank our PTA and the Maines family for all they have planned to recognize and celebrate Woodburn staff.  We also want to thank every family that donated gift cards for our raffle.  We are beyond grateful for our community's generosity  and can't wait to shower our teachers with love and appreciation.

Our Standards of Learning tests begin next week for students in grades 3-6.  We want our students to try their best on these upcoming assessments while limiting the stress and pressure they can bring.  We appreciate your support at home with this.

Together we grow,

Katy and Bridget

Subscribe to the FCPS Religious and Cultural Observances Calendar

The Fairfax County School Board approved the 2021-22 school year calendar that is designed to recognize, respect, and honor the plurality of religious and cultural observances in Fairfax County.

The school year calendar includes 15 religious and cultural observance dates that are recognized by FCPS.

Parents and community members can subscribe to have the dates sync with their Google, Outlook, or other online calendar applications. To do so, go to the Subscribe to Calendars web page and select Religious and Cultural Observances.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week Is a Great Time to Recognize FCPS Employees Through FCPS CARES

FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, held May 3-7, is a great time to acknowledge someone who has worked with your child or family during this unpredictable year. Parent Input for Next School Year

We are already working on our plans for the 2021-2022 school year! Class placements are an essential component of learning and building community. If you have information that you would like us to consider as we determine placements, please share your input by answering a few questions on the form shared below.  We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success, and we carefully consider each child’s strengths and needs during this process. Please do not request specific teachers, as this does not take into account the many variables we must take into consideration. It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral information.

Completion of this form is optional. If you would like to provide input, you may use the online form shared below; print, complete and email to Katy Richman (kjrichman@fcps.edu); or submit a hard copy to the office.  All forms are due by May 21, 2021. This is a hard deadline. Please know that input from forms turned in over the summer are difficult to honor since the grouping process has already started.

Woodburn Yearbook

This year is definitely one for the books – the Woodburn 2020-21 Yearbook that is!

Be a part of this most unique year by sharing a picture or two of your child virtual learning during this school year for our Woodburn Elementary Yearbook!

This will be a ‘virtual’ yearbook to be shared with all students. We’d love to see your kids learning virtually, participating in activities online, or how they took breaks in between.

Family members should get into the pictures too! We couldn’t have done this without your help and support.

Please submit your photos here - https://woodburnes.fcps.edu/node/4844

The deadline for picture submission is May 14th ~ don’t delay!

Thank you!

NVFS Parent Workshop - Making Positive Connections with Our Children - May 13

This workshop will be led by NVFS on May 13 at 6:00 p.m. in English and 7:00 p.m. in Spanish. Please join us!

As parents, we sometimes struggle to communicate with our kids and want to try a different strategy. We often find ourselves shouting at our kids and then regretting it. Also, we may feel guilty of seeing parenting as a stressful job. Join us for a conversation around strategies to parenting our kids from a place of love and connection. These strategies will help you and your kids regulate your emotions and develop a relationship based on healthy communication and respect. Link to follow next week!

Sidewalk Chalk Decorators for Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3 - 7. The PTA is looking for volunteers on Saturday, May 1st from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. to help create a sidewalk chalk art display outside, in front of Woodburn in advance of Teacher Appreciation Week.  We'll provide the chalk; we just need people who are willing to help decorate and shout-out every Woodburn teacher.  The more the merrier--parents and kids welcome.  Please email Ashley.e.maines@gmail.com if you are interested in joining in on the fun!
