Happy Friday GBE!
I know, I know, A PTA newsletter twice in one week, you must be thinking.
How did you get so lucky? :)
Shoutout to the GBE Admin Professionals!
Dear Heather Williams, Adriana Barreto, Melissa Dicker, Mary Sammartino, Nancy Hubbard, Janet McFadden, and Jennie Kang:
You ladies make our whole elementary school world work! THANK YOU for everything you do!!
The new GBE sign is looking oh, so fine!
After what feels like FOREVER, the sign is HERE! We’re hoping an electrician will come connect it pronto, but for now just bask in the update! So great!
Oh, and did you see that the first of our water stations has been installed in the cafeteria?? What great timing, to help our students more safely access water during the school day!
These school improvements are all thanks to YOU, GBE community! (And our powerhouse treasurer, Yulia, who’s a genius with grant applications!) Let’s keep ‘em coming!
Teacher appreciation!
Let’s try this one more time! Don’t you want to jump in and help show GBE teachers that they’re loved and important?! Below is a note from our amazing Teacher Appreciation Committee Chair, Beth Palarca:
We love our teachers and can’t wait to show it during Teacher Appreciation Week starting May 3rd! If you would like to help the PTA give back to the teachers there are a few ways to help!
- Donate painting supplies for our top secret Teacher’s Lounge Makeover: painters tape, large brushes, rollers, paint trays, drop cloths
- Donate your time – If you would like to help paint Thursday April 29- Sunday May 2 let us know!
- Donate K cups, bagged ground coffee, or single wrapped tea bags – we would love to create a stash!
- Donate gift cards or prizes to be raffled off to the teachers who’ve worked so hard this year!
- Reach out to any of your local business contacts about ways they might partner with us to show our teachers how grateful we are! (We have a tax ID number to account for any of their donations!)
Contact Beth Palarca – beth.peterman@gmail.com Happy to come pick up any donations and coordinate with you!
Musical PTA Board Chairs…
There’s been a bit of a switch up! The following GBE parents have names in for board candidacy next year. Usually there needs to be a 30 day notice of candidates, pre-voting. I’m hoping we can motion to bypass that at the May meeting? So. In case you missed it last week, or if you’d like to note the changes, here are your 2021-2022 PTA Board candidates:
President: Sara McClung. Hey there! I’ve previously served on the GBE PTA as silent auction chair, vice president, and president. My daughter, Kiernan, is a rising third grader. I’m an author, a graphic designer, and a small business owner. I love GBE and our community! I still don’t know Robert's Rules of Order. I still can’t commit the bylaws to memory. I would like to focus next year on making sure the PTA does a better job reaching out to a wider population of our families, to make sure everyone in our GBE community has a voice. That, and hopefully bring back our Fall Festival (though perhaps in the spring) and silent auction!!
I still know Black Lives Matter and will work to make sure nobody ever forgets it. I want Asian American Pacific Islanders to feel welcome, and seen, and loved. The same goes for all GBE families. Every single one.
Vice President: Shannon DiGaudio.Hi there! My name is Shannon DiGaudio. I have a current second grader at GBE who has been a Roadrunner since Kindergarten. I’ve had the privilege of serving as your Secretary for the past two school years, and hope to have the opportunity to continue to support the awesome work the PTA does for the GBE community as next year’s vice president. I have worked for FCPS as a special education teacher for the past 17 years. I am passionate about helping our kids have the best school year experiences possible!
Secretary: Yulia Sanapuji.Hi, my name is Yulia. I have been on the PTA board for the past two years as treasurer and would like to continue helping to make an impact on the GBE school community. Since there is a consecutive term limit and there are many other volunteers to fill the treasurer position (joking), I am happy to take on another role on the board to ensure we do have a board and active/functioning PTA for the next school next year!
Treasurer: Roxanne Bristol. You all may know Roxanne from her previous years as an absolute rock star PTA president! Her children are currently in first and third grade at GBE. She’s a force to be reckoned with for any type of festival planning or donation solicitation. She always puts the students first and has a strong background in the financial field. (Bio written by Sara, as I lost Roxanne’s original!!)

Summer Reading Skills Program!
This summer, help your child become a confident, enthusiastic reader in the Summer Reading Skills Programs, offered through a partnership with the University of Richmond School of Professional & Continuing Studies and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development.
Strengthen Skills, Build Confidence, Enjoy Reading
These programs teach key reading skills for every grade, from phonics and sight words for yonder children, to comprehension, textbook strategies and writing skills for older kids and everything in between.
Guided by a knowledgeable and supportive teacher, students in these programs experience reading success again and again, developing their skills and building confidence in outstanding books at the right level of challenge for each age.
Your child will build the skills, confidence, and motivation they need to become an avid, enthusiastic reader, who enjoys reading for school and for pleasure.
How the Program Works
Your child will attend weekly live online classes that build skills and provide great experiences with terrific books -- books that are filled with interesting characters, exciting storylines, and engaging themes. Between classes, your child will practice reading and complete fun interactive lessons that develop core skills and build confidence.
An institute of Reading Development Teacher will provide all the support and instruction your child needs to grow as a reader and student. Your child will get a jumpstart on the next school year and be ready to make it a big success!
