Cardinal’s Message

Cardinal’s Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and  Friends,

We completed our first week of four days of in-person instruction.  It was great to see so many of our Cardinals together in the building again.  We will continue to adjust and make any necessary changes that need to occur to make sure all of our community finishes the school year out strong.

More students in the building, means longer lines for arrival and dismissal.  When arriving or picking students up from school, please keep safety in mind!  In order to help our Kiss and Ride line move as smoothly as possible, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Be Courteous!  Please remember that you are setting an example for hundreds of students when driving at school.
  • ONLY students who WALK home southwest (toward McHenry, Kingsley, Cedar) will exit through Door 3.
  • ALL other non-bus riders will either exit through Door 11 (walkers) or report to the cafeteria to be called for Kiss & Ride.
  • ALL students must use crosswalks to cross the parking lot.
  • Students may only cross the parking lot when accompanied by a designated adult.
  • Drivers who enter the parking lot wishing to stop MUST park in a designated parking spot.
  • Drivers may not park on Park Street blocking or partially blocking the school parking lot entrance or exit.
  • Children must unload from the passenger side of the car.
  • Drivers must stay in their car.
  • Drive slowly and stay alert.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

Newest Members of the Cardinal Family

Join the staff in welcoming two new members to our community!

Alexia Candamo (pictured left) joins our front office staff in the mornings. She comes to us with a long history of working for Fairfax County Public Schools, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. Mrs. Candamo’s warmth and friendliness fit in perfectly with our office staff, and we are thrilled that she has joined us!

Joining our custodial team is Maria Bernal (pictured right).  Mrs. Bernal, who previously worked in the private sector, comes to us with much experience.  Her can-do attitude make her a perfect match for our school!

Mrs. Candamo and Mrs. Bernal are both excited to be a part of Cunningham Park’s little corner of the world, and we are just as happy to have them here!

Calling All Pre-Covid Library Books - Please Come Home!

This weekend, we invite families to take a deep dive under beds, behind car seats, in old backpacks, and everywhere a CPES library book could be hiding since March 2020 to help us find our long lost treasures.  We miss our gentle readers.

P2 Focus: Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence

by Dr. Keri Mina, CPES Technology Coach

People strong in this trait have the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Focusing on appreciating the beauty around us can help us find increased joy and meaning in the world.

Our digital citizenship connection to appreciation of beauty and excellence is: We find balance in our digital lives. To be able to appreciate the beauty around us, we must first unplug. Making sure we balance our digital lives with other activities helps us grow in our appreciation of beauty and excellence in our world. Technology provides us with many benefits, but so does unplugging and searching for the beauty in other things as well.

Try this at home: Have a technology-free time every day. Learn to appreciate the beauty around you. Take a family walk, go play at a park, take a bike ride or a hike. Talk with your family about all the beauty you see in the world around you. This is fun to do in different seasons, year round. Put on your coats and boots and take a hike in the snow. Put on your swimsuits and play in the sprinkler in your yard when it’s warm outside. Crunch leaves on the sidewalk in autumn. Pick a flower in the spring. Learn to appreciate all the beauty that can be found in all times of the year.

Quote of the week: “At some point in life the world’s beauty becomes enough. You don’t need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough.” -TONI MORRISON
