A Note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Rocky Run Families and Students,

Wow, what a week! We definitely are experiencing the quick changes of spring and the energy that warmer temperatures bring.  It has been a pleasure welcoming back over 300 students for four days of in-person instruction.   We have also been busily planning for the fall by engaging in staffing, supporting academic advising for all of our students, and thinking ahead to a five day, in-person return.

Reflecting on current events

The verdict in the Chauvin trial that was announced  earlier this week has sparked conversation amongst students, our faculty, and our community members.  As with past events, we are here to provide students and staff with a safe space to process and share.  You may have noted that FCPS has sent messages and resources to provide support for staff, students, and families to process current events.

I want to acknowledge that each of you may be in a different place in response to this most recent event.  I too am focused on reflection and assessing my own feelings as an educator, mom, and community member.  As a school, we are working with our Equity Team comprised of teachers and student leaders to provide opportunities for engagement, emotional support, and action.   We are proud of the work our school community has collaborated on this year through town halls, book clubs, after school clubs and Rock Time lessons to see, listen to, and hear each other.  We know there is much work to be done.

Administrative Professionals Appreciation Week:

I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with truly talented, caring and committed staff including our amazing Office Team of AJ Ries, Carol Cutler, Carol Chrzanowski, and Tina Dempsey with support from Inge Gedo and Mari Thomason.  They are the front line staff who take your phone calls, assist your children, support teachers and connect our community.  We thank them for their hard work and dedication to Rocky Run MS.

Student Laptop Updates - IMPORTANT:

Students can go to any FCPS school and restart their computer for updates. SOLs are coming and students need critical updates installed on their computer to be prepared.

Staying Informed:

Please be sure you are checking email frequently as well as the RRMS website for critical updates about SOL testing, Hearing and Vision Screening, and Laptop Wellness Checks.  Many of these events require sign ups and are time sensitive.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and support. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions, concerns or feedback.

Sincerely,

Amy Goodloe, Principal

This week, Student Services Department held our first week of our "Stress Less Program," focusing on Physical Self-Care. The Rock Time lesson was on the importance of physical activity, as well as sleep on mental health. Next week, our focus shifts to Emotional Self-Care. We will continue to have activities planned for both in-person and virtual students. Please have your children check their grade-level Google Classroom!

FCPSOn Devices for SOL Testing

All online students, whether they take the SOL or the VRSPT, need to make sure that computers have been restarted and are updated prior to testing. Our math department is walking through computer health checks for SOL testing.

Virtual students will have the opportunity to come into the building and connect to the FCPS Wi-Fi and restart their computers and update. The dates and times for coming to Rocky Run Cafeteria (enter through Door 1) are:

  • Monday, April 19, 2021 from 9:00 AM – 12 Noon
  • Monday, April 26, 2021 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

If you have opted out of taking an FCPSOn laptop, one will be provided the day of the test. Virtual students taking the VRSPT and do not have an FCPS laptop must pick one up at the school. Please use student technology request form to make an appointment.

Library Happenings

On April 14th, all students participated in a virtual author visit during Rock Time. Thanks to our generous PTA, we were able to host James Ponti, Christina Soontornvat, and Karina Yan Glaser who joined us from different parts of the country - Florida, Texas, and New York City - to chat about what makes a great story. Authors shared about their writing process, the intricacies of how a book goes from an idea to print, how they get their inspiration, and much more!

Students can access all of the authors' books on MackinVIA or for curbside pickup using Destiny Discover. They are all also available at the public library and wherever books are sold. If you are interested, purchase their books with signed bookplates and benefit the Rocky Run library by using this link to order from Bookworm Central. The Rocky Run MS virtual bookfair is open all year; we encourage you to purchase books via the bookfair if you are able and interested.  Happy Reading!
