GBE PTA 04.19.2021

Happy Monday GBE!

And Ramadan Mubarak to those observing.

Teacher appreciation!

The week in which we show our gratitude to these GBE rock stars is quickly approaching! Below is a note from our amazing Teacher Appreciation Committee Chair, Beth Palarca:

We love our teachers and can’t wait to show it during Teacher Appreciation Week starting May 3rd!  If you would like to help the PTA give back to the teachers there are a few ways to help!

  1. Donate painting supplies for our top secret Teacher’s Lounge Makeover: painters tape, large brushes, rollers, paint trays, drop cloths
  2. Donate your time – If you would like to help paint Thursday April 29- Sunday May 2 let us know!
  3. Donate K cups, bagged ground coffee, or single wrapped tea bags – we would love to create a stash!
  4. Donate gift cards or prizes to be raffled off to the teachers who’ve worked so hard this year!
  5. Reach out to any of your local business contacts about ways  they might partner with us to show our teachers how grateful we are! (We have a tax ID number to account for any of their donations!)

Contact Beth Palarca – beth.peterman@gmail.com   Happy to come pick up any donations and coordinate with you!

Next Year’s Board…

We’ll hold a vote on the following candidates at our May meeting. So far, each position has only one candidate in the running* and below is a brief bio for each of us:

President: Sara McClung. Hey there! I’ve previously served on the GBE PTA as silent auction chair, vice president, and president. My daughter, Kiernan, is a rising third grader. I’m an author, a graphic designer, and a small business owner. I love GBE and our community! I still don’t know Robert's Rules of Order. I still can’t commit the bylaws to memory. I would like to focus next year on making sure the PTA does a better job reaching out to a wider population of our families, to make sure everyone in our GBE community has a voice. That, and hopefully bring back our Fall Festival (though perhaps in the spring) and silent auction!!

I still know Black Lives Matter and will work to make sure nobody ever forgets it. I want Asian American Pacific Islanders to feel welcome, and seen, and loved. The same goes for all GBE families. Every single one.

Vice President: Yulia Sanapuji. Hi, my name is Yulia. I have been on the PTA board for the past two years as treasurer and would like to continue helping to make an impact on the GBE school community. Since there is a consecutive term limit and there are many other volunteers to fill the treasurer position (joking), I am happy to take on another role on the board to ensure we do have a board and active/functioning PTA  for the next school next year!

Secretary: Julie Stadel. Hi, my name is Julie. I have a current second grader and kindergartner. I’ve volunteered at our amazing PTA events over the past three years and now I’m ready to make an even bigger contribution to our GBE community through serving as the secretary on the board next year. Despite the pandemic, the PTA has still been active and I’m looking forward to the great things we will do next year as things hopefully become a little more “normal.”

Treasurer: Shannon DiGaudio. Hi there! My name is Shannon DiGaudio. I have a current second grader at GBE who has been a Roadrunner since Kindergarten. I’ve had the privilege of serving as your Secretary for the past two school years, and hope to have the opportunity to continue to support the awesome work the PTA does for the GBE community as next year’s treasurer. I have worked for FCPS as a special education teacher for the past 17 years. I am passionate about helping our kids have the best school year experiences possible!

* (Feel free to replace “running” with “reluctantly agreed so we’ll still have a PTA next year. But we’re depending on our GBE community to step up with us for a fuller more productive year!”)

GBE’s (Tree) Face Lift!

Last week, 2nd graders had the opportunity to beautify GBE and help plant some new trees on campus! For the past few years, Mrs. Brickhouse and the rest of the amazing 2nd grade teachers have worked with Fairfax County’s Urban Forest Management to bring new trees to GBE, involving their students with the planting process. How fun!

GBE could even be on track for recognition as a Tree Campus in years to come! (A really cool way for students to practice environmental stewardship and learn about how trees contribute so much to environmental quality and our quality of life.)
