Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We hope this message finds you safe and healthy.  We are excited to share a new feature in the Paw Print called SPOTLIGHT on Belonging. The concept of belonging is a core value at Poplar Tree. Our hope is that every student, every family member, and every staff member feel welcome when they walk through our doors. I’m sure there have been times when that has not been the case, and we are committed to working hard until every member of our community feels that sense of belonging. We all have a story and when we truly listen with an open heart and mind to people’s stories, we take that first step towards understanding each other. Please take a few minutes to listen to our first SPOTLIGHT interview with Angela Velasquez, one of our Spanish teachers.

Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend!

Belonging

SPOTLIGHT on Belonging:

Meet Angela Velasquez!

At Poplar Tree we recognize that equity means more than just access to programs and curriculums.  Equity means creating an inclusive learning community where each staff person and student feels like they belong.

This is the first in a series of interviews that will highlight Poplar Tree staff persons, their journey to belong and their strategies for creating an inclusive learning community here at Poplar Tree.

Interview:  Poplar Tree Spotlight on Belonging

Hero Squad

Hero Squad Campaign

We are in the FINAL week of our Hero Squad campaign. The campaign ends on 4/30. We are so close to meeting our goal of $5,000! Please help us reach our goal by using one of the ways below to donate. Keep sharing these links with family members and friends or on social media. Students will earn a variety of prizes for donations this year. Prizes earned will be mailed directly to your home at the close of the campaign.

  1. Donate on our school’s online donation page at https://events.lls.org/pages/nca/PoplarTreeElementarySchool-2020-2021
  2. Donate on your child’s classroom donation page. Check in with your child’s classroom teacher for more information and their specific link.

This year, we are doing a grade level competition at Poplar Tree. The grade level that donates the most money will have some brave teachers complete a dare voted on by students. So, keep raising money to see some of Poplar Tree’s teachers dump slime over their head or get turned into a human sundae!

Please contact Mrs. Sniffin, SCA teacher sponsor, at smsniffin@fcps.edu if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful cause!

College Gear Day

SCA Spirit Day

The next SCA Spirit Day is Friday, April 30, and it’s College Gear day. If your child doesn’t have college gear, encourage them to wear the colors of their favorite college. We can’t wait to see different colleges represented both at home and in-person.

College Day

Chantilly Pyramid College Day 2021

We are excited to announce that Poplar Tree will continue its annual tradition of College Day on Friday, April 30!   Here’s what’s on the agenda:

  • College Spirit Day! Students and teachers are encouraged to wear their college gear or college colors--t-shirts, hats, whatever! Parents are welcome to join in the fun, too!
  • Take a photo of your spirit wear and share on Twitter with the hashtags #ptescollegeday2021 and #amazingthingshappeneverywhere and tag us- @PoplarTreeES and @PTES_Counselors. We can’t wait to see your College Spirit!
  • Students will explore colleges with games and activities on our Virtual College Day 2021 Google Site. They can also check out where their teachers went to college and explore some college websites.

It’s never too early to start thinking about college! For more information about how parents of elementary aged children can prepare for college, check out this College Preparation Checklist Brochure

tech help

Tech Help Info

We know that as we move through Virtual Learning, technology issues arise. If you're having trouble with your FCPS laptop, here's a few things to try:

  1. Restart your computer! (We have found that this solves MANY of our problems - including those microphone, camera, and sound issues!)
  2. Visit this webpage to checkout some self-help guides!
  3. FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.
  4. If you still cannot get your laptop working, students and/or parents can submit an IT support ticket to get help with district digital resources or your FCPS issued laptop.  Find the portal here.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding!
