1. From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of the Chantilly HS Community:
I hope you had a good week. Governor Notham issued Executive Order 72 yesterday and it will impact our graduation ceremony. First, it does not go into effect until May 15th so our plans for prom remain as is. Overall, it appears to be great news for schools and the many activities we have planned to celebrate students at the end of the year. Please allow us and the FCPS legal team to review the order in detail and we will get communication out in the next few days on the updated capacities. In regards to graduation, there are specific guidelines; while capacity has been increased there are still strict requirements and social distancing that must still be followed.
Of particular note for graduation is that the distance between families is now only 6 feet as opposed to 10 feet. Also, with capacity at 50% instead of 30% we will be able to allow more guests. While all of this is great news, please allow us to review this thoroughly, get all our legal guidance and obtain an update from Jiffy Lube Live. We are working as quickly as possible on this new information and will have something out as soon as we can.
Scott Poole
Principal
2. Eating Disorder Parent Information
The Code of Virginia, 22.1-273.2 requires Virginia Public Schools to provide, on an annual basis, parent educational information regarding eating disorders for pupils in grades five through twelve. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2020):
Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Eating disorders are not fads or phases, and can have serious consequences for health, productivity, and relationships.
Eating disorders can develop or re-emerge at any age. Eating disorder specialists are reporting an increase in the diagnosis of children, some as young as five or six. Many eating disorder sufferers report that their thoughts and behaviors started much earlier than anyone realized, sometimes even in early childhood. Although most people report the onset of their eating disorder in their teens and young adulthood, there is some evidence that people are being diagnosed at younger ages.
In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed eating disorder documents with detailed information to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. The letter and fact sheet have been translated and posted on the following webpage: http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/translations/dss-healthmedical.htm.
3. Staff Appreciation Week
The last week in April is Staff Appreciation week. The PTSA would LOVE to honor as many staff members as possible. The PTSA is sending out a survey to all students asking them to select who has impacted them the most while at Chantilly (one vote per student). This is where the CHS family comes in! For every gift that is donated, a staff member will receive a prize. Please sign up for what gift(s) you would be willing to donate as one of the prizes to a worthy CHS Staff member. The more prizes we collect, the more staff we can honor. Creativeness is encouraged! There are around 400 Staff at Chantilly High School, let's show them that we care.

Please drop off donation(s) at the front office on Thursday 4/22 or Tuesday 4/27.
The PTSA is also offering lunch to all staff members.
4. 2021 Odyssey Yearbook
Parents – thanks for all the inquiries about the 2021 Odyssey yearbook! Not too late to order, and never too late to check with Mrs. Downes to be sure you have! www.yearbookordercenter.com and mkdownes@fcps.edu.
5. Library Book Return
LIBRARY BOOK RETURN As we approach the end of SY20-21, the Chantilly High School Library will be collecting any library materials that you may have at home. These materials may be from any FCPS School Library. For the convenience of students who are virtual, there will be a bin outside of Chantilly HS Door #1 to collect these items during the week of April 26th - 30th. No fines will be assessed for any of the returned materials. The Chantilly HS Library is open every day from 7:55am-3:15pm. Items can be returned via the book drops located in the hall outside of the library and outside Sub School 1. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help us collect these materials.

6. Recognitions
Cheerleading competed in the State Meet on Saturday and finished as Runner-Up in the State for 6A. Congratulations to the team and coaches on their performances this year!
Football lost to Madison 14-19 in the Region Final on Friday. As freshmen, the class of 2021 witnessed a winless varsity football season in 2017. Last Friday, they played for the Region Championship. Four years of dedication and faith in themselves, each other, and the program culminated in an opportunity to play for a championship for the first time in ten years. Click here for details.
7. Recent Student Successes
This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students. I meet with recognized students each week (virtually) to congratulate them.
