April: Month of the Military Child

Wear PURPLE on Wednesday, April 21

At Mount Eagle, we are proud to have military families as part of our school community. There may be unique challenges that students may experience with parents deploying and moving to a new school. Our teachers and school support team are here to support any and all families needing assistance.

On Wednesday, all are welcome to PURPLE UP! It is a day to recognize the strength and sacrifices of our military connected students.  Why purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine Corps red, and Navy blue.  All students and staff, virtual and in person, are invited to wear something purple on that day to celebrate!

If you are a military family, here are some events:

  1. The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) has a Call for the Arts Contest to submit creative work
  2. The Military Child Education Coalition and Blue Star Families are partnering to have a Month of the Military Child event at Fort Hunt Park (15 min drive from our school) on Monday April 26th  between 2pm-4pm. It is posted on the Military Parent Advocate Volunteer FB page and also on the BSF page

SOL Testing This Year

Parents of Grades 3-6 Students: We need you to complete this form today indicating whether you want your child to take the SOL tests.

To help us plan, we are asking parents to share their intentions for SOL testing using this Google form: https://bit.ly/3dJdZ9q by April 16, 2021.

What is the purpose of this testing? What will they assess?

SOL tests assess students on content knowledge in Reading and Math in grades 3-6, and in science in Grade 5.  Because of the COVID pandemic, schools have prioritized content in each grade level, focusing on some skills while assigning independent learning for others.  The SOL tests will assess all standards, including ones that might not have been taught synchronously this year.

When are the tests scheduled at Mount Eagle?

SOL’s will be administered across Fairfax county between April 26 and June 4, 2021.  The planned schedule for each grade level’s testing can be found here: https://bit.ly/39Si5uD All SOL tests will be administered at school and in-person, whether your child is an in-person or virtual learner.

What if I don’t want my child to take the SOL this year?

We know parents might have concerns about health and safety, and the difficulty of tests that assess learning in a pandemic. This year, parents are able to refuse testing if they have concerns about the impact COVID, which includes both health and safety concerns and concerns about the impact on learning.  Students are still able to move to the next grade without taking the SOL, and their academic record is not impacted.

You can find more information about your rights to refuse testing on the FCPS Testing Parent Refusal page here:https://www.fcps.edu/node/34277

What if I want to learn more?

You can find more information about SOL testing at Mount Eagle on our site at https://bit.ly/39Si5uD.
