2021 SOL Calendar at LJMS
 A Message from Principal Magliola
Good Evening LJMS Families,
We are excited to share this week we will welcome back our current in-person students for 4 days a week of in-person instruction. Thank you to those families that have completed the intent survey. Families that have completed the survey and indicated their preference will receive an email confirmation tomorrow from our Student Services office indicating your start date as Tuesday, April 20th. If you have not responded but would like to have your child attend 4 days in-person, please be on the lookout for our survey to be sent tomorrow morning or call us to let us know your preference has changed. At this time, if you have opted for your students to remain 2 days a week, please continue to have your student follow their current schedule.
With this awesome update for our students, we will likely face some logistical adjustments with transportation and technology as we update our routines throughout the week. If your student is in person, please make sure your student is at their bus stop in the mornings each day in order to arrive on time. Transportation will be updating their routes to accommodate the increase in students riding the buses. Families using Kiss N Ride will be able to drop their students off beginning Tuesday, April 20th. We also want to remind all in-person families of the updated safety guidance as listed below:
- As far as we know right now, bus stops will remain the same. We have contacted Transportation to confirm and will communicate if something changes. If you are not sure about your student's bus number and stop, please let me know. You are also welcome to drop your student off and pick them up at Kiss-n-Ride each day.
- While there are quite a few classrooms that will be operating at 3 feet of social distancing, we were able to keep 6 feet of social distancing at lunches, in band and chorus, and in many of our classrooms.
- Please remind your students how to properly wear their masks, to keep an extra mask in their backpacks, and to take advantage of time between classes to wash hands.
I hope you all have a wonderful week and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

SOL Updates
We have shared our SOL calendar above and will continue to share the weekly bell schedules for our SOL weeks in May. Please use the link below to access and review how Standards of Learning (SOL's) will take place this year at LJMS. Due to the switch to 4 days a week, we have worked to ensure our testing calendar is beneficial for ALL STUDENTS. This is a positive change since it means that we will have less asynchronous time and lose less instructional time. Please see the updated testing calendar below.
https://jacksonms.fcps.edu/testing
- SOL intent form deadline has been extended until April 18th Intent Form Here
- VRSPT (VA Remote Student Progress Test) information can be found using the link above for the LJMS Testing Page.
Is your student's laptop ready for SOL testing?
Since most of our virtual students have not been in the building this school year, it is critically important that their laptops have the necessary updates for SOL testing. Please scroll down to the section about Laptop Care for students, and follow the steps identified there.
ALL students will need to bring their school-issued laptops fully charged (and bring chargers with them) to school on testing days. If your student does NOT have a school-issued laptop, they should NOT bring their personal laptop to school for testing. We will temporarily issue them a laptop for the testing day only.
If your student is taking Algebra or Geometry, please keep in mind high school graduation requirements before deciding to opt your student out. Students will receive a high school credit when they pass the Algebra or Geometry SOL and pass the course, which is required for graduation.
NOTE: Students in Geometry already have a high school credit for passing Algebra last year and may choose to opt out of the Geometry SOL without penalty.
https://jacksonms.fcps.edu/testing

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings
As additional student groups return to school in person, parents and caregivers are asked to complete a Health Screening Commitment form before student(s) return to school buildings. This document confirms that a parent, caregiver, or guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home should they become ill. When you log onto ParentVUE, the option to complete the Health Screener should pop up automatically. Electronic completion of the form through ParentVUE is preferred, but we are able to send hard copies home. Please direct all questions and completed forms to Monica Iskander, mxiskander@fcps.edu

Third quarter report cards will be mailed next week. In addition to the report card, the envelope will also contain information on end-of-year grade flexibility and the Pass-No Mark Status form that parents can use this year.
For this school year FCPS has adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes for SY2020-21 to ensure students are not penalized by the challenges brought on by pandemic learning and to help our students achieve a strong finish to the school year. Please read below. Please email your student’s school counselor if you have any questions.
Flexibility for Final Marks
Applied to all end of year final marks:
- Final mark of “D” or “D+” in any course will be automatically assigned a mark of “P” (pass) as the final mark at the end of the school year.
- Final mark of “F” in any course will be automatically assigned a mark of “NM” (no mark) as the final mark at the end of the school year.
By parent/guardian request:
- Students/families may select a mark of “P” (pass) for any courses for which a passing grade is earned for the final mark.
- Action Needed: Should you wish to designate one or more courses as Pass status for anticipated grades of “A” through “C-”, the Pass-No Mark Status Form must be submitted to your school counselor/Student Services by May 10, 2021.
- Students and families are encouraged to carefully consider the option to request a Pass instead of a passing letter grade for a final mark.
Additional Information for Middle School Students Enrolled in High School Credit-Bearing Courses
Impact of “NM” (No Mark) or “P” (Pass) on High School Transcript
For any high school credit-bearing courses, the final mark will be included on the high school transcript.
A final mark of “P” indicates that a student has earned credit for the course and may advance to the next course in the sequence if applicable, but the mark of “P” will not impact that student’s grade point average (GPA).
A final mark of “NM” awards no credit for the course, and students will not be eligible for the next level of the course.
Students and families are encouraged to carefully consider the option to request a Pass instead of a passing letter grade for a final mark.
Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision and Hearing screening is conducted every year for seventh grade students. In-person students are being screened during the school day at LJMS. For seventh grade students who are virtual learners this year, parents can schedule a screening for your student by using this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4EAAA92BA1F49-ljms. If you would like to opt-out of screening for your student for this school year, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/qmuhWNRX57rZYEo48. Please email Tanya Shuford at twshuford@fcps.edu if you have any questions.
Please reach out to your child's school counselor should you have any questions regarding their schedule. We are here to help!

Tech Support
FCPS has launched a toll-free parent Technology Help Desk to assist families with technology issues. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.) We have also created an online portal for older students and parents/guardians to request technology help.
I wish you a wonderful first day and I look forward to our continued journey together as we support our students.

Virtual Learning Tech Tips
It is important that all students (including students taking classes virtually) to connect their laptops to the FCPS network on a regular basis. If your student is taking classes virtually, please find time in the next couple of weeks to come to the school parking lot (the administrators' parking spaces or pulling up at door 2 gives you the best access to the network), and have your student complete the steps below.
